Chapter 10

Maura asked to see Elowen.

Elowen refused.

Good.

A month later, asked again.

Refused.

Six months passed.

Then Elowen said yes.

Neutral hotel sitting room.

I did not attend.

Later Elowen told me only what she wanted me to know.

Maura apologized specifically.

For threatening her employment.

For the tray.

For saying servants could not choose when to mourn.

For crushing Nora’s flowers.

That last one mattered most.

Elowen asked:

“Why did you do that?”

Maura had no strategic explanation.

She said:

“Because you were leaving when I needed you to stay, and I wanted you to feel smaller than my problem.”

Ugly.

True.

Elowen answered:

“My mother was dying before your wedding existed.”

Then she left.

No forgiveness.

No performance.

Maura accepted it.

That was the first decent thing she did with Elowen’s grief.
