Chapter 5

Twelve coins.

Twelve families.

They were still inside my hotel.

I had kept the guests.

Now I understood why that instinct mattered.

No one had been allowed to remove wedding gifts.

My men opened every crate with the recipients present.

Champagne.

Crystal.

Paintings.

Jewelry.

One ridiculous bronze horse.

Then the coins.

Eleven more.

Each hidden beneath velvet inserts or inside gift cases.

I laid all twelve on the head table where my wedding cake should have been cut.

Guests gathered around.

No ceremony.

No bride beside me.

Just black metal.

I read the family marks aloud.

Rourke.

Vale.

Corbett.

Ashford.

Bell.

Kerrigan.

Six more.

Some faces changed.

Others genuinely did not understand.

Important.

I asked representatives to step forward only if they knew what the coin meant.

Seven did.

Five did not.

That distinction mattered.

The five had given gifts through older relatives or business managers who added the coins without explaining.

I did not punish ignorance as conspiracy.

The seven were different.

Anthony Vale spoke first.

“Your father honored black favors.”

“My father also smoked in bed.”

A few men looked down to hide smiles.

I continued.

“I stopped the custom.”

“You never formally abolished—”

“No.”

I raised one finger.

“I stopped accepting them.”

Sometimes that is enough.

Anthony looked toward Maura.

“She said the marriage changed things.”

There.

I turned toward her.

Maura stood ten feet away without her veil now.

“What exactly did you tell them?”

Her voice remained steady.

“That marriage would create a broader household.”

“Meaning?”

“That people you excluded might be heard again.”

Not completely unreasonable.

Dangerous because she hid it.

I asked Anthony:

“What did you give Gareth?”

Silence.

Not gift.

Payment.

He finally admitted.

A vintage car.

Another man gave access to a resort property.

Another promised private financing for a Sedgewick hotel renovation.

The black favors were being sold.

Not for cash in envelopes.

For patronage.

Gareth built a network by auctioning future access to me.

And Maura intended to make my wedding the moment those private promises became publicly enforceable.
