Chapter 8

Alessia ended the meeting without exposing Dante’s bluff.
Garrett left smiling.
But the smile had cost him something.
He knew the original footage was gone.
That meant he either participated in deleting it—
or someone had told him the deletion was complete.
Alessia quietly narrowed the list.
Then another clue appeared.
Miriam remembered Evelyn asking a strange question weeks before the gala.
“Does Alessia still keep copies of family recordings off-site?”
At the time Miriam assumed she meant old wedding footage.
Now it sounded different.
Alessia turned to her mother.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Miriam’s eyes lowered.
“Because every strange sentence only sounds important after something terrible happens.”
That answer was painfully human.
Alessia nodded.
She stopped demanding that everyone around her should have predicted betrayal before she did.
Instead, she asked her security team to reconstruct the event from secondary sources.
Guests’ phones.
A photographer’s raw files.
Catering hallway cameras.
No single recording showed everything.
Together, they began rebuilding the truth.
One clip showed Garrett kicking Miriam.
Another captured Evelyn saying:
“Your mother should learn her place.”
A third showed Alessia giving Garrett a chance to apologize.
“Kneel and apologize.”
Then his laughter.
The public story started changing.
Garrett’s edited clip lost power once longer fragments appeared.
Several neutral capos returned to Alessia’s side.
Garrett reacted quickly.
He released something else.
Private audio.
Alessia’s own voice.
Months earlier.
“If anyone ever puts a hand on my mother, I will forget every rule in this house.”
The sentence spread through the family network.
Alessia listened to it three times.
She remembered saying it.
Miriam had been sick after a confrontation with an aggressive creditor connected to old family business.
Garrett had been beside her.
He had asked:
“What would actually make you lose control?”
Alessia had answered without thinking.
Now she understood.
He had not merely learned what she loved.
She had told him exactly which button to press.
Dante looked toward her.
“You think he kept that for months?”
Alessia’s hand became still.
“No.”
May you like
Her eyes lifted.
“I think he built the gala around it.”
