Chapter 24 - The teddy bear

Otis survived.
Barely.
The seam was repaired.
The recorder came out permanently after investigators no longer needed it.
I copied Celeste’s bedtime-story files to secure storage.
Then put a simple audio player in the teddy.
Playback only.
No recording.
Anouk objected.
“I want record.”
“Use your tablet with me.”
“Why?”
“Because secret recording can create grown-up problems.”
“Seraphina caught because record.”
“Partly.”
“So good.”
Children love outcome reasoning.
I sat beside her.
“What caught Seraphina mostly?”
She shrugged.
“Me tell?”
“Yes.”
“Door thing.”
“Logs.”
“Teresa.”
“Texts.”
“Lots.”
She nodded.
“Otis helped.”
“Yes.”
That was accurate.
Not magical.
Then:
“Mom stories stay?”
“Yes.”
We pressed the button.
Celeste’s voice filled the room.
“Once upon a time, there was a penguin who wanted to be mayor—”
Anouk groaned.
“This one again.”
“Your mother had limited material.”
She smiled.
The object returned to what it had been before Seraphina.
A place for Mom’s voice.
May you like
Not evidence.
That mattered.
