Chapter 15

Claire almost quit.
That surprised me more than Grant’s betrayal.
She stood in the nursery two days later with her small suitcase by the door.
“Why?”
She looked embarrassed.
“Because everything is calm now.”
“That is usually the goal.”
“You don’t need me.”
I looked at Luca sleeping in his carrier.
Then at her.
“You protected my son when everyone around you told you not to.”
“That doesn’t mean I belong here.”
Good answer.
I respected it.
“What do you want?”
She looked surprised.
No one had asked.
“Work.”
“You have it.”
“Without owing anyone?”
I understood immediately.
Grant and Vanessa had turned every favor into leverage.
Claire would not stay if gratitude became another chain.
“Your salary pays for work.”
She waited.
“The rest is mine to remember, not yours to repay.”
Her shoulders relaxed.
She stayed.
Not because I rescued her.
Not because she became family overnight.
Because the job became safe enough to choose.
Later that afternoon, Luca started crying.
Claire picked him up immediately.
I watched.
She noticed.
“Too fast?”
I almost laughed.
“No.”
Vanessa’s voice still lived in the walls.
Don’t teach him everyone comes when he cries.
I looked at my son.
He had one language.
Need.
That was not manipulation.
That was infancy.
“Pick him up every time you think he needs it.”
Claire smiled faintly.
“You know people are going to tell you he’ll get spoiled.”
May you like
“They can tell Grant.”
That finally made her laugh.
