Chapter 6

The next thing Claire told me was worse because it was smaller.

Vanessa had been changing Luca’s blankets.

Not replacing them.

Choosing them.

“She removed the warmest swaddles whenever guests were coming,” Claire said.

Vanessa laughed.

“That sounds insane.”

Claire looked at her.

“You said babies who are uncomfortable cry louder.”

Nobody moved.

Vanessa realized what she had admitted.

Too late.

I felt my anger go very still.

“How many times?”

Claire hesitated.

“Three that I know.”

Grant swore under his breath.

Vanessa turned on him.

“Don’t.”

He looked at her.

“You were supposed to make the house look unstable, not—”

He stopped.

Everyone heard it.

Make the house look unstable.

I stared at him.

Grant’s face changed.

I stepped closer.

“Finish.”

“No.”

“Finish.”

He looked away.

I understood.

The plan had two halves.

Grant handled the organization.

Vanessa handled the house.

His job was to make capos believe my attention had weakened.

Hers was to give them something to witness when they visited.

A crying newborn.

Exhausted staff.

A father leaving meetings.

A nursery that always seemed one step from chaos.

Then the hotel conversations turned observation into argument.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You were hurting my son so men could call me distracted for protecting him.”

She shook her head.

“We never intended real harm.”

Claire’s expression changed.

“You poured freezing water over his carrier.”

Vanessa snapped:

“He was covered.”

Silence.

There it was.

The mathematics of cruelty.

Not whether something was wrong.

Whether it stayed below the threshold the abuser had invented.

I looked at Luca sleeping against Claire.

My brother had not needed my son dead.

May you like

He needed him distressed.

Just enough to make fatherhood look like weakness.
