Chapter 13

Mark’s first letter arrived without excuses.

Good start.

Noah,

I was supposed to protect you.

I did not.

I let you be hungry, cold, and scared because I wanted something your mom hid.

That was wrong.

I stopped.

Three-year-old.

Too much.

I rewrote nothing.

I simply asked Mark for a shorter version.

The second letter said:

Noah,

Daddy did bad things that scared you.

You did not cause them.

You were not bad.

I am sorry.

Better.

I asked Noah whether he wanted me to read a letter from Mark.

He thought.

“Daddy letter?”

“Yes.”

“Mad letter?”

“No.”

He allowed it.

I read slowly.

At the end, Noah stared at the floor.

“Daddy say I not bad?”

“Yes.”

He looked confused.

“Claudia say bad.”

“She was wrong.”

“Daddy say too.”

“Yes.”

I would not rewrite history to make Mark’s apology easier.

Noah needed both truths.

His father said terrible things.

His father now said they were wrong.

“What Daddy do now?”

“Lives somewhere else.”

“Laundry?”

I almost broke.

“No.”

“Why not?”

Because Noah associated wrongdoing with isolation.

Of course.

“Adults don’t get put in laundry rooms either.”

He thought.

“Then punishment?”

There was that word again.

I sat beside him.

“Consequence.”

“What’s that?”

Hard.

“Something changes because of what you did.”

He frowned.

“Like Daddy no see Noah?”

“Yes.”

“Is Noah punishment?”

My throat tightened.

“No.”

I answered immediately.

“You are not punishment.”

He stared.

“Then why Daddy sad?”

“Because he misses you.”

“Can sad?”

“Yes.”

Children understand compassion faster than adults.

Noah could miss Mark and still not want him close.

Mark could be sad and still deserve distance.

No one needed to become a monster for a boundary to be real.

That was new language for the Bellacortes.
