Chapter 15

Mark saw Noah after four months.
No surprise.
No forced hug.
No Claudia.
The visit happened in the lodge garden room.
I stayed nearby.
Noah entered holding the drawing.
Mark’s face broke when he saw him.
He did not move closer.
Good.
“Hi, buddy.”
Noah stared.
“Hi.”
Silence.
Mark looked at the picture.
“You still have it.”
Noah nodded.
“Grandpa likes.”
“I know.”
Another pause.
Then Noah asked:
“Why no food?”
Mark closed his eyes.
There it was.
No gentle opening.
Children go straight to the wound.
“I was wrong.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted you to tell me something.”
Noah frowned.
“Mommy box?”
“Yes.”
“Was mine?”
“No.”
Good answer.
“Then why ask me?”
Mark started crying.
“I thought you knew.”
Noah watched.
“Daddy sad.”
“Yes.”
“Crying okay.”
I looked away.
That line.
Something I had been teaching him without realizing he would one day give it back.
Mark wiped his face.
“Yes.”
Then:
“Can I hug you?”
Noah stepped backward.
“No.”
Mark nodded.
“Okay.”
That was the most important thing he did that day.
Nothing.
He accepted no.
The visit lasted twelve minutes.
Afterward, Mark looked at me outside.
“That’s all?”
“For today.”
“He barely spoke.”
“He stayed.”
Mark nodded.
True.
Then he asked:
“Will he ever forgive me?”
“I don’t know.”
He looked down.
“What do I do?”
“Become someone safe even if he never rewards you for it.”
That answer hurt him.
Good.
