Chapter 10

Peter did not deny knowing Sarah died at the quarry road.

That surprised me.

He arrived at the lodge just before sunset after I summoned him back from Denver. He walked into the library, saw Claudia crying, Mark staring at nothing, and me holding Ellen’s journals.

Then he sat down.

“I wondered when Box 27 would open.”

I wanted to break his jaw.

Instead I asked one question.

“Why?”

Peter looked tired.

“Because Thomas was dead.”

“That is not why.”

“No.”

He rubbed his hands together.

“The family had barely stabilized after his death. If people learned he had poisoned Ellen, everything he touched would be questioned.”

“Good.”

Peter looked at me.

“You say that now.”

“I would have said it then.”

“That’s exactly what we feared.”

There it was.

Truth became dangerous because it might create consequences.

Peter admitted Claudia called him after Sarah’s fall. Sarah was alive but badly injured. Vincent wanted to call an ambulance.

Peter stopped him.

Mark stood.

His whole body shaking.

“You let her die?”

Peter’s voice became quiet.

“Yes.”

Mark crossed the room.

I caught his arm.

Not because Peter deserved protection.

Because Mark did not need the rest of his life defined by the next five seconds.

He fought me once.

Then stopped.

Peter continued.

He arranged for Sarah’s death to look like sudden illness afterward because she had already been traveling and missing family events. The story was simple enough that nobody dug.

Especially Mark.

Especially me.

I looked at Claudia.

“You married him five months later.”

She shook her head frantically.

“I didn’t know Peter let her die.”

“But you knew Sarah was dead because she found Thomas’s secret.”

“Yes.”

“And you still married Mark.”

Her face collapsed.

“I loved him.”

Mark laughed.

The sound was terrible.

“You loved me enough to stand beside me at Sarah’s funeral and say nothing.”

Claudia cried.

Peter looked at me.

“You want to know the worst part?”

I already did.

He continued anyway.

“Sarah had Noah with her the day she confronted Vincent.”

Mark went still.

Noah had been eighteen months old.

Peter looked toward the hallway.

“He was asleep in the back seat.”

May you like

And suddenly the child Claudia threw into the snow was no longer only a witness to an old secret.

He had survived it once before.
