Chapter 8

Claudia did not confess.
Not yet.
But fear makes structure visible.
She started blaming people who had not been accused.
She said Thomas had men everywhere.
She said Sarah was reckless.
She said nobody planned for Noah to find the airplane.
Nobody had mentioned Noah.
I leaned into the phone.
“So the plane mattered after Sarah died.”
Silence.
“Why?”
Claudia answered too quickly.
“Because it had the key.”
“You knew the key was still inside?”
Another silence.
There.
Sarah had found Box 27 without taking the key permanently.
She must have opened the plane, copied or borrowed it, then returned everything because she wanted the secret to survive if something happened to her.
Smart.
Desperate.
Very much like Ellen.
Mark sat on the floor beside the shelves.
“I married you.”
Claudia cried harder.
“I loved you.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
She had no answer.
I ended the call.
Then I opened the third tape.
This one was recorded days before Ellen died.
Her voice was weaker.
Thomas was in the room.
“I know what you put in the vitamins.”
Silence.
Then Thomas said:
“You shouldn’t have tested them.”
Mark covered his face.
I did not.
I needed to hear every word.
Ellen said she had stopped taking them and would tell me everything. Thomas told her I was already under enough pressure. He said if I knew my own brother had betrayed me, I would tear the family apart.
Ellen replied:
“Then let it tear.”
I almost laughed through the pain.
That was her.
Thomas became angry.
He said I had changed because of her. Said I was becoming weak. Said once she was gone I would remember who I was supposed to be.
Then Ellen said the sentence that ended my brother forever in my mind.
“You don’t love Richard. You love the version of him that needs you.”
The tape clicked off.
Mark cried silently beside me.
I stared at the machine.
Thomas had not killed Ellen with one dramatic act.
He had been poisoning her slowly.
And Sarah had discovered it years later.

That meant Sarah’s death was not the beginning of this story either.
It was the second woman in my family who learned the truth and disappeared before she could bring it to me.
