Chapter 1

Victoria Bellacorte had buried her husband eleven months earlier.

She had not buried his organization with him.

Most people in the ballroom did not know that.

Helena preferred it that way.

Marcus depended on it.

And three-year-old Noah Reed accidentally walked into the lie carrying folded table linens.

Helena tore the bundle from his arms.

One sheet struck his face.

Another fell beneath Marcus’s polished shoe.

Then Helena shoved the child onto the marble.

“Servants’ children don’t wander through rooms built for real families.”

Noah’s palms struck first.

His chin trembled.

Nearby guests laughed nervously because Helena Bellacorte had trained generations of people to mistake cruelty for authority.

Victoria turned the gallery corner at that exact moment.

She stopped.

Noah looked at her.

But instead of pointing toward Helena, he stared at Daniel’s portrait.

“Mrs. Bellacorte…”

His voice shook.

“That painting wasn’t crooked yesterday.”

Victoria’s attention shifted.

The frame leaned slightly left.

Marcus moved instantly.

Too instantly.

He blocked her path.

“Leave it.”

Victoria looked at him.

“Move.”

He grabbed her arm.

Shoved her into the wall.

Then slapped her.

“Uncle Daniel is dead. Stop pretending this house still answers to you.”

Helena smiled.

Victoria did not.

Marcus reached again.

She knocked his arm aside and hit him once.

He crashed through the antique globe display.

Victoria removed Daniel’s portrait.

A hidden compartment appeared.

Sealed envelope.

Black ledger.

Old brass key.

Helena’s face became white.

She rushed forward.

Victoria caught her wrist and slapped her away into the padded art-storage cases.

Then she raised the key.

“Why does this scare you so much?”

Marcus looked toward Helena.

That was his mistake.

Victoria saw it.

Noah saw it too.

And from the floor, the little boy whispered something no one expected.

“My mommy has a key like that.”

Helena’s eyes snapped toward him.

Not anger.

May you like

Terror.

And Victoria understood immediately that Noah had just become more dangerous to them than the ledger in her hand.
