Chapter 14

Noah did not understand Daniel’s recording.

He understood hunger.

Fear.

His mother disappearing overnight.

And Helena laughing when he cried.

That was enough.

Victoria brought him upstairs for food.

He ate quickly.

Too quickly.

Clara noticed.

“Slow down, baby.”

Noah immediately stopped.

Put the sandwich down.

Victoria saw it.

“Why did you stop?”

He looked at Helena across the gallery.

Helena had been brought upstairs under guard.

Noah whispered:

“She said servants eat after family.”

Clara closed her eyes.

Victoria crouched.

“Were you hungry earlier?”

Tiny nod.

“How long?”

“Breakfast.”

It was nearly midnight.

Clara stared at Helena.

“You denied him food?”

Helena rolled her eyes.

“He wandered away from the service kitchen.”

“He’s three.”

“And?”

Clara started crying.

Helena smiled cruelly.

“See? This is why your son is weak.”

Victoria stood.

“Stop.”

Helena looked at her.

“You’re going to feed every crying servant child now?”

“If they’re hungry.”

Helena laughed.

“That is why Daniel should never have trusted you.”

Victoria smiled faintly.

“No.”

“What?”

“That is why he did.”

The answer silenced her.

Noah picked up the sandwich again.

Slowly.

Victoria waited until he finished.

Then he asked:

“Can Mommy eat too?”

Clara covered her mouth.

Victoria said:

“Yes.”

Helena scoffed.

“She had dinner yesterday.”

Clara turned.

Something finally broke.

“You locked me in a room.”

“You touched what wasn’t yours.”

“You frightened my child.”

“He needs discipline.”

“You threatened me.”

“You needed silence.”

Clara stepped closer.

For one second, Helena looked ready to slap her.

Victoria’s guards shifted.

Helena stopped.

Clara saw it.

Power gone.

She whispered:

“You were brave when I was locked behind a door.”

Helena’s face twisted.

Clara continued:

“Now you need guards to hold back the people you taught to fear you.”

No dramatic strike followed.

No revenge.

Just truth.

Helena looked around.

Capos.

Servants.

Her own son.

Nobody lowered their eyes anymore.

Then the oldest red-slash capo removed his pin.

Placed it on the table.

Not surrendering to Victoria.

Rejecting Helena.

Others followed.

And Helena watched the structure she built with fear collapse without a single person needing to hit her.
