Chapter 10

Odessa asked to apologize to Mirelle.
Mirelle said no.
Six months later, still no.
Good.
Then Odessa wrote a letter.
Mirelle chose to read it.
One line mattered:
I mocked your fear because I needed you to feel too small to challenge the future I had planned.
Accurate.
Then:
I told myself Lily would have more as an Ashwick child than as your daughter.
Worse.
Better truth.
Mirelle folded the letter.
No response.
Lily was never shown.
Children should not become recipients of adult confession because adults crave forgiveness.
Odessa left the city eventually.
No dramatic exile.
No punishment tour.
She built a life elsewhere.
I heard she never married.
Not relevant.

Her life no longer orbited mine.
That was healthier for everyone.
