Chapter 6

Odessa’s motive was not simply jealousy.

It would have been easier if it were.

She genuinely believed Lily endangered the future household.

Odessa expected to marry me.

Expected children.

Expected to become the central woman inside Ashwick.

Then discovered I already had a daughter.

With a maid.

Everything became uncertain.

Where would Lily live?

Who would she call mother?

Would I prioritize Mirelle?

Would Lily outrank Odessa’s future children socially?

Odessa hated uncertainty.

So she converted it into structure.

Mirelle becomes distant.

Lily becomes Ashwick.

Odessa becomes stepmother publicly.

Future children enter a settled hierarchy.

Neat.

Cruel.

Elegant.

She told me:

“I was trying to prevent chaos.”

I answered:

“You were trying to prevent competition.”

Her face tightened.

“From a child?”

Exactly.

A grown woman competing with a three-year-old for imagined future relevance.

Then she whispered:

“You don’t know what it’s like to marry into a family where the dead, the old, and the children all outrank you.”

That contained truth.

Ashwick was oppressive.

But truth about one’s fear does not justify controlling someone weaker.

Odessa had been pressured too.

Beatrice constantly compared her to my mother.

Old captains tested her.

Guests watched.

None of that gave her Mirelle’s daughter.

I told her:

“You should have asked me to change the house.”

She laughed bitterly.

“I didn’t think you would.”

Maybe she was right.

May you like

We would never know.

She chose manipulation instead of testing the possibility.
