Chapter 3

Ashdown House looked nothing like a prison.

That was the point.

White walls.

Winter garden.

Small library.

Good food.

Three staff members.

One locked gate.

Control rarely advertises itself honestly.

I arrived with Eulalie and two bodyguards.

Ottavia stayed behind at my townhouse.

Not detained.

Simply no longer trusted with the direction of anything.

Callum opened the front door himself.

Thirty-one.

Thin.

Work shirt.

Hands stained with paint and machine oil.

Eulalie hit him before hugging him.

A sibling privilege.

“You idiot.”

He laughed into her shoulder.

“Good to see you too.”

Then she cried.

Four months of fear came out quietly.

I gave them time.

Eventually Callum led me toward the back sitting room.

Miriam Arden sat beside the window knitting.

Sixty-two perhaps.

Simple cardigan.

Reading glasses.

Nothing about her looked like the dead aristocratic mother Ottavia had described.

When she saw me, she froze.

“You’re Tobias.”

I stopped.

“You know me?”

She smiled sadly.

“My daughter keeps magazines.”

Interesting.

Then:

“She said I was never to contact you.”

“Why?”

Miriam looked embarrassed.

That emotion told me everything before she spoke.

“Because I used to clean houses.”

Silence.

Not scandal.

Not betrayal.

Work.

I glanced toward Callum.

He looked furious.

Miriam continued.

“I raised Ottavia alone.”

Her father left when she was two.

Miriam worked hotel rooms.

Private homes.

Event kitchens.

Anything.

Ottavia attended good schools through scholarships and Miriam’s exhaustion.

Then Ottavia entered wealthier circles.

Changed how she described childhood.

First she said her mother worked in hospitality management.

Then property management.

Then that Miriam was unwell.

Eventually:

Dead.

I sat opposite her.

“Did she bring you here?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Eight months ago.”

Before our engagement announcement.

Why?

Ottavia feared someone from her old life would recognize Miriam.

Miriam had been living in Queens.

Normal apartment.

Neighbors.

Church friends.

Then Ottavia said she had found a beautiful country house where her mother could rest.

Miriam agreed.

At first voluntarily.

Then she realized every trip required Ottavia’s approval.

Every visitor too.

Then Callum arrived to repair the heating system.

He recognized Miriam.

Because she had once employed his mother beside her at a hotel.

One ordinary connection.

Enough to threaten an extraordinary lie.
