Chapter 7

Ottavia’s lie had layers.

The mother was only the oldest.

She told me her father had been a financier.

False.

He sold restaurant equipment and left when she was small.

She told me she grew up partly in Connecticut.

False.

Queens.

She told me her maternal grandfather owned vineyards.

False.

He drove a city bus.

None of this mattered to me.

That infuriated her.

Not because I mocked it.

Because indifference meant every sacrifice made to hide it had been unnecessary.

“You don’t care?”

“No.”

She stared.

“Not at all?”

“I care that you lied.”

“But the rest?”

I thought.

“I might have liked meeting the bus driver.”

She started laughing through tears.

Then crying harder.

There was tragedy in that.

She had spent half her life outrunning people I would probably have enjoyed.

But sympathy could not erase Callum.

Or Eulalie.

Or Miriam.

I asked when the lies first entered our relationship.

First date.

Not everything.

Small edits.

Her mother “lived abroad.”

Later “ill.”

Later dead.

Each version solved the discomfort created by the previous one.

That pattern mattered.

Lies rarely arrive complete.

They evolve to defend themselves.

When I proposed, Ottavia panicked.

An engagement meant guests.

Background questions.

Family introductions.

Photographs.

That was when Ashdown began.

She told Miriam the country house was temporary.

After the wedding, she would explain everything to me.

I looked at her.

“Would you?”

She hesitated.

There.

No.

Marriage was supposed to make confession safer.

Then honeymoon.

Then first anniversary.

Then some future moment where leaving her would feel harder.

Delay is addictive.

Callum threatened the timeline.

So she created debt.

Eulalie threatened the debt.

So she destroyed wages.

Tonight I intervened.

Otherwise?

Ottavia looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.”

That was probably true.

People imagine they control cruelty because they remember choosing the first step.

They forget momentum begins making choices later.
