Chapter 11

Audrey filed for divorce.

Not because the recording forced her.

Because it finally removed the last argument she kept having with herself.

Maybe Preston had been scared.

Maybe the marriage could be repaired.

Maybe she had misunderstood.

The recording ended those maybes.

Preston’s attorney requested mediation.

Audrey refused any private session.

Everything would be formal.

Documented.

Structured.

Rocco supported her.

Then deliberately stepped back.

Her lawyer represented her.

Her doctor advised her.

Her therapist helped her.

Rocco was her father.

Not her commander.

That distinction was new for both of them.

Audrey temporarily moved into a quiet apartment inside one of Rocco’s residential properties rather than his main home.

“You don't want to stay with me?”

“I want my own door.”

Rocco understood.

Preston had turned a home into confinement.

Audrey needed a space nobody entered because of family status.

Gary sent a written apology.

Audrey read it.

She did not respond.

He admitted the central truth:

I thought telling Preston was helping save your marriage. I chose his right to know over your right to leave safely.

Audrey folded the letter.

For the first time, she cried over Gary rather than Preston.

She had trusted him.

His betrayal had not come from hatred.

It came from believing marriage mattered more than her fear.

Those betrayals were harder to understand.

Because people could hurt you while sincerely believing they were helping.
