Chapter 5

Preston denied everything through his attorney.

He admitted knowing Audrey wanted to leave.

He admitted calling her.

He denied arranging the fall.

Brenda refused to speak.

Gary cooperated.

That division began tearing apart the Reed family faster than Rocco could have accomplished with threats.

Then Audrey told Rocco why she had wanted to leave.

Not one reason.

Three.

Preston had become controlling.

He had lied about money.

And he had begun using her father’s business relationships without telling her.

Audrey worked as an executive overseeing hospitality properties connected to Moretti interests.

Six months earlier, she discovered Preston had been introducing himself to vendors as someone authorized to negotiate on behalf of the Moretti organization.

He was not.

At first, she thought it was ego.

Then she found contracts.

Discounts.

Private agreements.

Referral payments.

Nothing individually catastrophic.

Together they showed Preston had built a second business identity around being Rocco Moretti’s son-in-law.

Audrey confronted him.

He apologized.

Then continued.

“Why didn't you tell me?” Rocco asked.

“Because I knew what you'd do.”

Again.

Rocco heard the pattern.

His daughter had concealed danger because she was also afraid of his reaction.

His anger protected her and isolated her at the same time.

Audrey continued.

“After the baby comes, I was going to resign from the properties we both dealt with.”

“And?”

“Separate everything.”

Banking.

Housing.

Employment.

Marriage.

She planned to leave cleanly.

Preston knew a divorce would threaten access to the network he had built around her.

The pregnancy gave Audrey a deadline.

She wanted the separation complete before the baby was old enough for Preston to use custody arrangements as another form of control.

Rocco finally understood Brenda’s words differently.

That baby cannot be born.

Perhaps the child was not the original problem.

The child was the point after which Audrey intended to stop tolerating everything else.
