Chapter 10

Naomi wanted the club back.

Not for a shrine.

For a reason I did not expect.

Evelyn had founded a girls’ golf program at the local club twenty years earlier.

After her death, Warren stopped funding it.

Called it frivolous.

Naomi kept it alive through small donations.

She wanted the seven-iron displayed in the training room beside Evelyn’s old photographs.

I hesitated.

“So children can look at the weapon Warren used to frighten her?”

Naomi frowned.

“No.”

Then:

“So Warren doesn’t get to decide what that club means forever.”

I liked her immediately.

They replaced the grip.

Polished the shaft.

Kept the initials E.H.

No story about intimidation on the wall.

Just Evelyn Hale, founder.

Champion twice.

Coach.

Donor.

Woman.

The club became a golf club again.

That mattered more than destroying it.

Preston attended the reopening privately.

No speeches.

Naomi told him to fix a broken shelf while he was there.

He did.

Good.

Warren refused to come.

Also good.

Not every ending requires everyone in the room.
