Chapter 5

Warren denied everything.

Of course.

He claimed Preston loved me.

True.

Possibly.

He claimed the wedding joined families.

Also true.

Potentially.

He claimed no one expected ownership.

That was where he lost me.

I asked Gideon to bring one person upstairs.

Bramwell Keene.

Sixty-four.

Marconi capo for thirty years.

Traditional.

Polite.

Increasingly uncomfortable with taking instructions from a twenty-five-year-old woman who had inherited nothing and earned everything.

I had noticed his discomfort.

Never punished it.

Disagreement is not betrayal.

Bramwell entered and immediately saw Preston on the sofa, Warren seated rigidly, and my ring on the vanity.

His face changed.

“Boss.”

“Did Warren Hale approach you?”

Silence.

Enough.

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

Preston turned toward his father.

Interesting.

He did not know.

“What did he want?”

Bramwell looked ashamed.

“He asked whether some older men would feel more comfortable after the marriage.”

“More comfortable with what?”

“With Preston sitting in strategic dinners.”

There.

Not replacing me.

Not officially.

Sitting beside me.

Then speaking more.

Then being consulted.

Then becoming the male voice some men preferred.

Warren had studied my organization and found its weakest prejudice.

He did not need to conquer Marconi.

He only needed to give older men an excuse to redirect loyalty without calling it disobedience.

A husband.

Respectable.

Natural.

Traditional.

“What did you say?”

Bramwell met my eyes.

“That I serve Marconi.”

Good.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

He hesitated.

“I thought saying it would insult you.”

There.

Another old male mistake.

Protect a woman from disrespect by hiding the disrespect.

I sighed.

“Next time insult me.”

Bramwell almost smiled.

“Yes, Boss.”

Preston stood.

“You did this behind my back?”

Warren looked at him as though he were slow.

“I was preparing your future.”

That sentence changed Preston’s face.

Not because he disliked the future.

May you like

Because he realized he had not been controlling it either.

The son who planned to control his wife had been managed by his father the entire time.
