Chapter 12

Isolde did not return to Hale House.
Warren expected her to.
Interesting.
He still believed narratives should end with old positions restored.
She stayed at Blackthorn for several months.
Not hidden.
Chosen.
Preston visited.
At first their meetings lasted fifteen minutes.
Then an hour.
Then dinner.
Some ended badly.
Good.
Real reconciliation should occasionally be unpleasant.
He accused her of leaving.
She admitted it.
She accused him of parroting Warren.
He admitted some of that too.
Once he shouted.
Then stopped himself.
Walked outside.
Returned ten minutes later.
Apologized for volume.
Isolde told me afterward:
“That was more important than a hundred flowers.”
Behavior interrupted.
Pattern broken mid-motion.
That is change.
Warren sent her a letter.
She returned it unopened.
His choice to write.
Her choice not to read.

Both survived.
Amazing.
