Chapter 11

Maya listened to the tapes alone first.

Eleanor’s voice filled the warehouse office.

Older.

Weak.

But unmistakably controlled.

She explained that Victor had never tried to kill her.

The attempted purge had come from men inside both factions who feared Eleanor and Victor might reunite and expose their theft.

Victor discovered part of the betrayal too late.

Instead of exposing everyone, he used the information to strengthen himself.

That destroyed whatever remained between him and Eleanor.

Years later, dying himself, Victor apparently gave Richard fragments of the truth.

Enough to know Eleanor had preserved evidence.

Enough to know Maya had been close to her.

Not enough to know where the evidence was.

Richard had spent years looking for the orchid because he believed it led directly to the ledger.

He had been wrong.

The orchid led to the question.

The question led to Victor.

Victor led to the key.

And the key led to the evidence.

Eleanor had divided the path deliberately.

Maya looked at Julian.

“You knew Richard was looking for me?”

“No.”

“Did Victor?”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

“I knew Eleanor had a young assistant. I never knew her name until you married Richard.”

Maya stared at him.

“And you said nothing.”

“I thought it was coincidence.”

“Men like you don’t believe in coincidence.”

Julian accepted that.

“No.”

“Then why?”

His answer was difficult.

“Because I didn’t want the old war opened again.”

Maya laughed bitterly.

“So everyone protected their peace by letting me marry a man who came looking for me.”

“Yes.”

That was Julian’s betrayal.

Different from Richard’s.

But real.

Maya did not forgive it.

The ledger contained names and payment records from decades earlier.

Several men were dead.

Some retired.

Three were still active.

One sat on the current leadership council.

Thomas Bell.

The same man who had helped explain Eleanor’s history after the birthday party.

Maya remembered Samuel Crane’s warning.

Some of them are still sitting at your tables.

Thomas had not merely known the history.

His father had been part of the attempted purge.

And Thomas had continued receiving money through one of Victor’s old companies.

The payments were small enough to appear harmless.

Consulting fees.

Property retainers.

Security reimbursements.

Maya understood the pattern.

Richard had been using old obligations to buy current loyalty.

Thomas was one of them.

There could be others.

The problem was no longer only Richard.

It was the network surrounding him.

Julian looked at Maya.

“What are you going to do?”

“Nothing tonight.”

He seemed surprised.

“No confrontation?”

“Not yet.”

“No threat?”

“No.”

Maya closed the ledger.

“Richard spent years thinking my biggest weakness was that I keep things that matter.”

Julian waited.

“He was right.”

May you like

She looked at Eleanor’s tapes.

“But he misunderstood what I do after I learn something no longer deserves to be kept.”
