Chapter 13

Richard talked for almost three hours.

Maya recorded the conversation with his knowledge.

No hidden traps.

No theatrical confession.

Just names.

Dates.

Payments.

Promises.

Some details matched Eleanor’s ledger.

Others matched Vanessa’s messages.

Several could be independently verified.

Richard admitted that Thomas Bell had helped him pressure two senior captains into supporting changes in the organization.

He admitted using Vanessa to search Maya’s office.

He admitted watching for the orchid ring for years.

He admitted the birthday humiliation was intentional.

Not the exact violence.

But the confrontation.

He had seen Maya carrying the velvet box.

Vanessa had told him the shape looked like jewelry.

Richard panicked.

He believed Maya planned to reveal the orchid in front of Julian.

So he decided to humiliate Maya before she could speak.

Make her angry.

Make her appear unstable.

Turn the party against her.

Instead, he lost control.

Maya listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she asked one question.

“Why the cake?”

Richard stared at the floor.

“Because I knew it would embarrass you.”

No grand strategy.

No hidden symbolic meaning.

Just cruelty.

Somehow that answer hurt most.

Maya stood.

Richard looked up.

“Is that it?”

“For tonight.”

“You said if I told you everything—”

“I said nothing about forgiveness.”

Richard closed his eyes.

The next confrontation was with Vanessa.

Maya did not need threats.

She showed her three messages Richard had provided.

Vanessa read them.

Her face changed.

One revealed Richard had considered cutting Vanessa out after retrieving Eleanor’s records.

Another showed him blaming Vanessa privately for the birthday disaster.

The third was worse.

R: If Maya finds out, Vanessa takes the fall.

Vanessa read it twice.

Maya watched six years of misplaced loyalty collapse in less than a minute.

“He wrote that before the party?” Vanessa whispered.

“Yes.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“What do you want?”

“The truth.”

“You already have Richard.”

“I want yours.”

Vanessa looked at Maya.

Then began naming accounts Richard had not mentioned.

That was the moment Maya knew she had won the most important part.

Not because Vanessa chose her.

Because Richard and Vanessa no longer trusted each other enough to maintain the lie.

By evening, Maya had two separate versions.

Where they matched, she had facts.

Where they differed, she had places to investigate.

Julian read the summary.

“You’re going before the council.”

“Yes.”

“You know Thomas will fight.”

“Yes.”

“Richard may too.”

“No.”

Julian frowned.

Maya looked toward the adjoining room.

Richard stood there.

Without his family pin.

Without his usual bodyguards.

Without Vanessa.

He had agreed to appear.

May you like

Not because Maya forgave him.

Because for the first time in his life, Richard understood that keeping one remaining relationship with Lily depended on telling the truth when it cost him something.
