Chapter 10

The major twist was not simply that Celeste and Adrian had been stealing together.

They had been building a paper trail designed to make Rocco appear responsible for Adrian’s fraud.

And Celeste had planned to use that paper trail against both men if she needed to save herself.

The forensic timeline finally made it clear.

Adrian began falsifying Rocco’s approval years earlier to keep favored family vendors inside Moretti Holdings after compliance rules tightened.

At first, Celeste had nothing to do with it.

She discovered one altered document accidentally while helping Rocco organize home files.

Instead of telling him, she confronted Adrian.

That gave her leverage.

Months later, when her own hidden financial obligations became dangerous, she created Blue Cedar.

Adrian helped route its invoices through the same exception system he had already corrupted.

Celeste received money.

Adrian preserved his vendors and authority.

Both believed they had enough evidence to destroy the other.

Then the relationship became more dangerous.

Celeste began moving authentic signed documents from Rocco’s cabinet so forged approvals could be modeled more convincingly.

Adrian brought modified copies during his nighttime visits.

They returned selected pages to Rocco’s files.

The goal was simple.

If an audit ever exposed the vendor fraud, the documents would make it appear that Rocco personally approved the exceptions.

Adrian could claim he followed executive orders.

Celeste had no corporate role and could distance herself from Blue Cedar by portraying it as one more vendor approved through Rocco.

But Celeste prepared an additional escape route.

She drafted a memo documenting supposed concerns about Rocco’s “irregular approvals.”

If Adrian turned on her, she could become the concerned fiancée who discovered financial misconduct.

If Rocco discovered Blue Cedar first, she could argue that Adrian had manipulated them both.

The entire scheme survived because each conspirator believed the other was more exposed.

Mia threatened that balance.

She had seen Adrian carrying blue-tabbed packets.

She had seen Celeste place papers into Rocco’s cabinet.

She had apparently once told Celeste, innocently, that Uncle Adrian “puts Daddy papers back.”

That was when the glasses started disappearing.

Celeste did not remove them because Mia could read contracts.

A four-year-old could not.

She removed them because Mia could identify faces, objects, and actions well enough to describe who was there and what they were doing.

“Always asleep” had been the lie Celeste gave Adrian to keep him coming.

He believed Mia never witnessed the exchanges.

The night of the reception proved otherwise.

Rocco sat across from Adrian after the findings were presented.

“You knew she took Mia’s glasses.”

Adrian’s face was gray.

“I knew she did it twice.”

“And you came back.”

“Yes.”

“You knew why.”

Adrian looked down.

“Yes.”

Rocco turned toward Celeste’s written statement.

She admitted removing the glasses.

She claimed she only wanted Mia to settle down and stop wandering during adult meetings.

No one believed that explanation anymore.

Rocco felt something colder than rage.

The conspiracy had not begun with a plan to frame him.

It evolved into one because both participants kept solving each new lie with a larger lie.

That was what made it dangerous.

Nobody woke up and designed the entire betrayal.

They built it one compromise at a time.
