Chapter 15

The final criminal proceedings took place sixteen months after the reception.
Adrian accepted a plea involving fraud-related conduct and falsified business approvals. His cooperation reduced the final sentence but did not remove it.
Celeste entered a separate agreement involving fraudulent invoices, document manipulation, and misuse of corporate funds.
Neither outcome looked like a Mafia movie.
There were no screams.
No executions.
No dramatic revenge.
There were lawyers.
Financial schedules.
Restitution.
Probation conditions.
Custodial terms.
Loss of professional and family authority.
Real consequences lasted longer than dramatic ones.
Rocco attended the final hearing.
Not to intimidate anyone.
To make sure nobody later told Mia that the truth disappeared because the adults had important names.
After court, Adrian approached him in the hallway.
He looked older without tailored family pins and men following him.
“Rocco.”
Rocco stopped.
Adrian held out nothing.
No handshake.
No request for help.
“I think about the glasses every day.”
Rocco’s expression remained still.
“You should think about Mia.”
“I do.”
“Good.”
Adrian swallowed.
“Can I write to her someday?”
Rocco did not answer immediately.
Sixteen months earlier he would have said no before Adrian finished the sentence.
Today he understood something harder.
Forgiveness and access were not the same thing.
Accountability and reconciliation were not the same thing either.
“Mia decides more of that as she gets older.”
Adrian nodded.
“And until then?”
“I decide what keeps her safe.”
“I understand.”
Rocco walked away.
That evening, he found Mia at the kitchen island drawing while wearing her green glasses.
One lens had a fingerprint on it.
Rocco took a cleaning cloth.
“Come here.”
Mia immediately covered the frames with both hands.
“No take.”
Rocco froze.
More than a year had passed.
The fear was smaller.
It was not gone.
He put the cloth on the counter.
“You keep them on.”
Mia watched him.
“I can clean them while you wear them.”
She considered the offer.
Then leaned forward.
Rocco carefully wiped one lens.
Then the other.
Mia blinked.
“Better.”
“Good.”
She returned to drawing.
Rocco looked at the child for a long moment.
Celeste’s scheme was finished.
Adrian had answered for his part.
The company had changed.
Mia was safe.
Yet one thing remained unresolved.
Not whether Celeste was guilty.
Not whether Adrian had betrayed him.
Those questions had answers.
The unanswered question belonged to Mia.
Someday she might ask to see Celeste again—the woman she had once expected to become her mother.
Rocco did not know what he would say when that day came.
For now, he let Mia keep her glasses exactly where they belonged.

On her face.
And when she looked up at him, she could see him clearly.
