Chapter 10

The next morning, I opened the doors.

Literally.

Every captain Lucia had been screening was invited into my suite.

No appointments through her.

No messages filtered through Grant.

No one asking whether I was “strong enough” to hear business.

They saw the wheelchair.

Good.

I wanted them to.

They also saw me alert, medicated correctly, and angry for the right reasons.

Paolo spoke first.

“We were told you didn’t want visitors.”

“I was told you stopped coming.”

Several men looked at each other.

That was enough to show how simple the method had been.

I looked around the room.

“How many of you were told I refused medication?”

Four hands.

“How many were told I had violent episodes?”

Six.

“How many were told Dr. Hart believed recovery was unlikely?”

Three.

Hart, standing near the therapy bench, looked furious.

“I said no such thing.”

Lucia finally lost patience.

“You’re turning household confusion into treason.”

I looked at her.

“No. I’m turning repetition into pattern.”

Grant laughed from under guard.

“You’re still in the chair.”

I turned toward him.

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“So what changes?”

Everything.

That was what he still did not understand.

I reached for the wheelchair arms and stood.

Slowly.

Not cleanly.

Not without pain.

But upright.

June moved instinctively closer.

I raised one hand.

She stopped.

I stayed on my feet long enough to look at every captain.

“I may sit again in thirty seconds.”

No one moved.

“That does not make her boss.”

I pointed toward Lucia.

“It does not make him boss.”

Grant’s smile faded.

“And it does not make any man in this room safer because he pretends my chair is a coffin.”

Then I sat.

By choice.

May you like

The silence afterward felt different from every silence Lucia had built around me.

This one belonged to me.
