Chapter 17

Three months later, the medication cabinet remained unlocked.

Edwin hated that from a house-management standpoint.

I kept it that way anyway.

Not carelessly.

Symbolically.

The current bottles sat inside in plain view with the correct schedule beside them. No hidden drawer. No one family member controlling access. June, Edwin, and the medical staff all knew exactly what was supposed to happen.

So did I.

One morning, I rolled toward the window and noticed breakfast waiting.

June stood by the door.

“You going to throw it?”

I looked at the tray.

“That happened once.”

“Porcelain remembers.”

I almost smiled.

Then my leg twitched.

A small spasm.

Nothing like before.

June did not rush.

She waited.

I looked at her.

“Help.”

She crossed the room immediately.

That word had become easier.

Maybe that was the real recovery.

Not standing.

Asking.

The spasm passed quickly.

Afterward, I looked down at the wheelchair.

Lucia believed the chair had turned me into a lesser version of myself. Grant believed every man around me secretly agreed.

For a while, I helped them believe it because I hated being seen needing anything.

I know better now.

Power is not the absence of weakness.

It is deciding who gets access to it.

June returned the medication bottle to the cabinet.

Still nearly full.

A new one.

Correctly full.

I looked at it and remembered the day she pulled another bottle out from beneath the cabinet, exposing weeks of manipulation with one simple act.

She had not rescued me from a wheelchair.

She had done something more useful.

She refused to participate in the lie built around it.

I put both hands on the chair arms and stood.

Slowly.

Carefully.

June watched.

No applause.

No captains.

No audience at all.

After a few seconds, I sat back down.

May you like

By choice.

And that difference was everything.
