Chapter 17

Three years after the engagement reception, we held another formal dinner on the terrace.

Not an engagement party.

Not yet.

Benedict sat near the center.

Older.

Quieter.

Linnea ran the entire event.

Rosamund attended beside me.

No ring on her hand.

Still.

That was fine.

A young guest accidentally dropped a folded hundred-dollar bill near the champagne table.

Linnea picked it up.

For one second, everyone who remembered the old night seemed to notice.

She looked at the bill.

Then at the guest.

“You dropped this.”

He took it.

“Thanks.”

Nothing else happened.

Perfect.

No bidding.

No command.

No room deciding what money entitled someone to do to another person.

Later Rosamund raised her glass toward Linnea.

Not above her.

Toward her.

Linnea returned the gesture.

Choice.

Benedict noticed.

“So.”

I looked at him.

“So what?”

“You going to marry her?”

“Mind your own business.”

He smiled.

Progress has limits.

Across the terrace, Linnea laughed at something one of the servers said.

Three years earlier, she sat beside me soaked in champagne with money crushed into her hand because guests believed payment temporarily purchased control over her dignity.

My father paid the most.

Rosamund performed the cruelty.

The guests supplied the applause.

I thought the problem that night was one vicious tradition.

It wasn’t.

The real problem was the belief beneath it:

That power had to be visible through someone else’s submission.

We changed that.

Not perfectly.

Not instantly.

But enough that tonight a hundred-dollar bill could fall beside a maid and remain exactly what it was.

Money.

Nothing more.

Rosamund touched my hand.

I looked at her.

No ring.

No promise bought with history.

Just a woman waiting to see whether I would hold hers.

I did.

Across the table, Benedict saw.

He opened his mouth.

I raised one finger.

He closed it.

Linnea noticed and laughed.

So did Rosamund.

May you like

So did I.

No one paid for it.
