Chapter 5

Linnea returned the money.

I refused.

She became angry.

Good.

Finally.

“I don’t want it.”

“It belongs to you.”

“It feels dirty.”

Fair.

So I asked:

“What do you want done with it?”

She thought.

Then:

“Pay the staff who worked tonight.”

Excellent.

Eleven thousand six hundred dollars.

Split among everyone who had been ordered to smile through the spectacle.

Kitchen.

Servers.

Cleaning crew.

Drivers.

Security staff who knew something felt wrong but believed they lacked authority to interrupt family guests.

That last group bothered me.

My house had rules protecting staff.

Yet nobody stopped Rosamund.

Why?

Because she was my fiancée.

Because Benedict was my father.

Rules become decorative when people believe family stands above them.

So I changed more than the House Purse rule.

Any employee could stop service if a guest physically humiliated staff.

Any bodyguard could intervene without waiting for family authorization.

Any manager could remove a guest from service areas.

No exception for my blood.

No exception for whoever wore my ring.

Rosamund heard.

“You’re writing policy because I poured champagne on a maid?”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“I’m writing policy because everyone watched you do it.”

May you like

Silence.

Systems are what remain after individual courage fails.
