Chapter 13

The engagement ended permanently.
That part required no court battle.
The rest did.
Selena ultimately accepted a plea rather than take the pool incident to trial.
Security footage was too clear.
Her attorney emphasized that the shallow end reduced the risk she believed she was creating.
Prosecutors emphasized that she deliberately shoved a three-year-old who could not swim.
The resolution included criminal penalties, counseling, probationary restrictions after any custodial portion, and a long-term no-contact order involving Ava.
Luca entered a separate resolution covering his assaultive conduct and other provable offenses.
His role in the Bianchi organization ended.
Immediately.
Not through violence.
Through revoked authority, terminated company positions, and written notice that he no longer represented Donato in any legitimate business.
Several associates complained.
One told Donato:
“He was trying to keep you focused.”
Donato stared at him.
“He used my daughter to do it.”
“He thought family business was suffering.”
“Then he should have told me.”
“He thought you wouldn’t listen.”
Donato leaned back.
“So he tried to train me.”
The associate said nothing.
That was the language Donato could no longer tolerate.
Train.
Correct.
Restore.
Strengthen.
Every one of those words had been used to justify making a child smaller.
The household changed.
No future spouse would receive automatic authority over Ava.
No relative could redirect childcare complaints.
Any nanny or housekeeper responsible for Ava had direct access to Donato’s office and to an independent child-safety contact.
Isabella’s belongings were returned.
Not all of them.
Donato deliberately avoided turning the house into a shrine.
He and Dr. Melissa Grant reviewed what made sense for Ava’s age.
The photographs she knew returned to her room.
The blue blanket returned to the chair beside her bed.
The bracelet remained stored until Ava could wear it without breaking it.
The locket became hers immediately.
She wore it under her cardigan.
Sometimes she forgot it was there.
That was exactly what Donato wanted.

A memory should belong to a child.
It should not have to become a battlefield.
