Chapter 8

Donato’s irreversible decision came after child protective services requested a broader review of Ava’s home environment.

His lawyers could have limited disclosure to the poolhouse incident and responded narrowly to formal orders.

Several senior associates wanted exactly that.

The Bianchi estate contained more than birthday parties.

There were council meetings.

Security logs.

Visitors with criminal histories.

Private business records.

Common-area surveillance.

Opening household systems to independent review created risk far beyond Selena.

Rebecca explained every consequence.

“Once evidence is preserved outside your control, you cannot decide later that something is inconvenient.”

“I know.”

“Investigators may ask why certain people were here.”

“I know.”

“Legitimate companies may distance themselves if private family activity becomes public.”

“I know.”

“You could lose contracts.”

“I know.”

Rebecca watched him.

“You want a minute?”

“No.”

Donato signed authorization for an independent forensic custodian to preserve and review all records relevant to Ava’s care, household authority, staff complaints, scheduling, and common-area surveillance.

No Bianchi staff member would decide what survived.

No family member would delete messages before review.

The decision divided the organization.

One uncle called him reckless.

A capo said:

“You’re letting outsiders audit how you raise your daughter.”

Donato answered:

“My fiancée threw her into a pool while her brother called it a joke.”

The man had no reply.

The review found something within forty-eight hours.

A private spreadsheet maintained by Luca.

It tracked Donato’s time.

Not all of it.

Only interruptions connected to Ava.

Breakfast delay.

Bedtime interruption.

School pickup.

Nightmare.

Pediatric visit.

Isabella anniversary.

Beside each entry was a number.

Minutes.

Hours.

Canceled meetings.

Then a column labeled:

Recovered after boundary.

Donato stared at the phrase.

Rebecca did too.

On days Selena successfully kept Ava away from him, Luca marked more time as “recovered.”

A child’s access to her father had become an efficiency metric.

Then they reached the week of Ava’s birthday.

One entry read:

High-emotion item expected. Good opportunity to test transition.

No mention of the pool.

No mention of pushing Ava.

No mention of destroying the gift.

Still, the language chilled Donato.

High-emotion item.

May you like

They knew the birthday present mattered.

And Luca had described that as an opportunity.
