Chapter 5 - THE CALLS

Alexander searched Veronica’s phone himself.
Not messages.
Calls.
One number appeared repeatedly.
Different area code.
Same caller.
He pressed it.
Veronica moved toward him.
One bodyguard stepped between them.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then a woman answered.
“Veronica?”
Alexander stopped breathing.
Three years disappeared from his face.
“Elena.”
Silence.
The line remained open.
Alexander could hear breathing.
Then the call ended.
He stared at the phone.
Veronica looked almost relieved.
“She won’t talk to you.”
Alexander turned.
“You told her something.”
“I told her you found the letters.”
“When?”
“And?”
“I said you were furious.”
Alexander laughed coldly.
“Accurate.”
“Not at her.”
“No.”
Veronica looked down.
Alexander called again.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then his own phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered immediately.
“Elena?”
Her voice came quietly.
“Is Sofia with you?”
Alexander closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Is she safe?”
“Yes.”
“Are you sure?”
The question stopped him.
He looked toward Veronica.
“Yes.”
Elena went silent.
Then:
“Put Ruth on.”
Alexander did.
Ruth came downstairs.
She took the phone with shaking hands.
“Elena.”
Ruth began crying before the second word.
Alexander stepped away.
He gave them privacy.
Veronica watched him.
For nearly ten minutes, Ruth listened more than she spoke.
Then she looked toward Alexander.
“Elena wants to speak to you.”
He took the phone.
“Elena.”
“I don’t know what to say to you.”
“Then don’t say anything yet.”
Silence.
Alexander continued.
“I found the letters.”
“I know.”
“I never ordered you kept from Sofia.”
“I know that now.”
His jaw tightened.
“When did you learn?”
“Six months ago.”
Alexander stared.
“Six months?”
“Ruth found me.”
He looked toward Ruth.
She lowered her eyes.
Alexander did not interrupt.
Elena explained.
After Eleanor died, Ruth decided she would not protect another Vaughn secret.
She searched old contacts.
Found Elena.
They met privately.
Ruth told her the recording had been manipulated.
Told her Alexander never ordered security to keep her out.
Elena spent months trying to decide whether to return.
“Why didn’t you call me?”
“I was afraid.”
“Of me?”
“Yes.”
Alexander closed his eyes.
Fair.
Elena continued.
She had left Sofia.
Even if manipulated.
Even if frightened.
Every month away made returning harder.
She feared Alexander would hate her.
Fear became shame.
Shame became another month.
Then another year.
“Veronica kept telling me Sofia was happy.”
Alexander looked toward his fiancée.
“She sent photographs.”
Of Sofia smiling.
Birthday parties.
Christmas.
Park visits.
Always safe.
Never the dressing room.
Never the maid uniform.
Elena thought staying away might hurt Sofia less than appearing and disappearing again.
Then three weeks earlier, something changed.
A young housemaid named Claire secretly contacted Ruth.
She had seen Veronica forcing Sofia to carry trays.
Making her fold towels.
Calling her “servant blood.”
Ruth told Elena.
Elena decided to return.
“What happened yesterday?” Alexander asked.
Elena became quiet.
“I called Veronica.”
“And?”
“I told her I would arrive tonight.”
Alexander looked at the clock.
Nearly ten.
“Where are you?”
Elena did not answer.
His chest tightened.
“Elena.”
Then came a knock at the front door.
Everyone in the room froze.
Alexander looked toward the hallway.
One bodyguard moved first.
Elena whispered through the phone:
“Before you open that door, ask Veronica what she promised me beside Sofia’s crib.”
Alexander slowly lowered the phone.
Veronica had gone white.
“What promise?”
She backed away.
Alexander repeated:
“What did you promise her?”
The knock came again.
Sofia’s small footsteps sounded upstairs.
“Daddy?”
Alexander looked toward Veronica.
Her voice broke.
“I promised Elena that if she ever disappeared…”
A pause.
“I would never let your family make Sofia ashamed of where her mother came from.”
Alexander stared at the maid uniform still lying among the ruined shoes.
The knock sounded a third time.
Then Sofia appeared on the staircase.
Her silver rabbit in one arm.
She looked toward the front door.
May you like
And whispered:
“Mommy?”
