Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN AT THE DOOR

Alexander opened the door himself.
Elena stood beneath the porch light.
For three years he had imagined this moment in every possible form.
Anger.
Relief.
Accusation.
Running toward her.
Turning away.
None happened.
They simply stared.
Elena looked older.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face thinner.
She wore a dark coat and carried one small travel bag.
Then Sofia appeared behind Alexander.
Elena’s entire expression collapsed.
Sofia stood halfway down the staircase clutching the silver rabbit.
She looked at Elena.
Then at the old photograph Ruth had placed beside the stairs earlier.
Then back.
Nobody spoke.
Sofia came down slowly.
Elena crouched.
Her hands shook.
“Hi, sweetheart.”
Sofia stopped several feet away.
“Are you Mommy?”
Elena began crying.
“Yes.”
Sofia looked toward Alexander.
He nodded.
The child turned back.
“Why were you gone?”
No adult in the room was prepared for the simplicity.
Elena wiped her face.
“I got scared.”
“Of me?”
“No.”
She shook her head quickly.
“Never of you.”
Sofia thought.
Then walked forward.
Elena opened her arms but did not grab her.
Sofia chose.
She stepped into them.
Elena held her.
For the first time since Alexander opened the door, he looked away.
Ruth was openly crying.
One bodyguard pretended to inspect the hallway.
Veronica remained near the sitting room.
She looked at Elena holding Sofia.
Something in her face broke.
Elena saw her.
The warmth disappeared.
She stood with Sofia in her arms.
“You.”
Veronica said nothing.
Elena looked down at Sofia’s pajamas.
Then toward the ruined dressing room visible through the hall.
The maid uniform lay on the floor.
Elena froze.
“What is that?”
Alexander answered.
“What she made Sofia wear.”
Elena’s face changed completely.
She handed Sofia to Ruth.
Then walked toward Veronica.
Alexander moved slightly.
Not to protect Veronica.
To make sure Elena did not do something she would regret.
Elena stopped inches away.
“You promised me.”
Veronica’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
“You stood beside Sofia’s crib.”
“I know.”
“You told me if I left, you would make sure nobody ever used my past against her.”
“I know.”
Elena’s voice shook.
“And you put her on her knees.”
Veronica looked down.
“Yes.”
Elena slapped her.
One clean open-handed strike.
Veronica’s head turned.
The bodyguards did not move.
Alexander did.
He stepped between them before a second blow came.
“Elena.”
She stared at him.
Not anger at him.
Not yet.
He lowered his voice.
“Not in front of Sofia.”
Elena looked toward her daughter.
The rage left her face.
She stepped back.
Good.
Veronica touched her cheek.
Then Elena said:
“I forgave you once.”
Alexander looked toward her.
Veronica closed her eyes.
“When?” Alexander asked.
Elena stared at Veronica.
“After she drove me away.”
Alexander’s face hardened.
Elena explained.
The night at the gate, Veronica told Elena Alexander had replaced her.
Played the edited recording.
Showed the photograph.
Elena left.
Three months later, Veronica found her.
Not Eleanor.
Veronica.
She drove nearly four hours.
She apologized.
She told Elena Eleanor had manipulated them both.
She admitted the recording was cut.
Alexander stared at Veronica.
“You knew three months later.”
Veronica whispered:
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t Elena come home?”
Elena answered.
“Because Veronica told me one more thing.”
Alexander looked at her.
“What?”
Elena’s eyes filled again.
“She told me you knew the recording was fake.”
Alexander froze.
Veronica’s face drained.
Elena continued.
“She said you and Eleanor planned it together because you wanted me gone without a fight.”
Alexander stared at Veronica with pure disbelief.
“I never knew.”
“I know now.”
Elena’s voice broke.
“But I believed her then.”
Alexander looked toward Veronica.
Every layer became worse.
“You found Elena.”
“Yes.”
“You admitted Mother lied.”
“Yes.”
“Then you invented a second lie to keep her away.”
Veronica could barely speak.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her answer came through tears.
“Because she was going to come back.”
Silence.
That was all.
No hidden scheme.
No complicated plan.
Veronica had reached the moment when she could repair what she helped destroy.
Then saw the life she wanted slipping away.
She chose herself.
Elena looked exhausted.
“I forgave the first betrayal.”
Veronica nodded.
“I never knew about the second until Ruth found me six months ago.”
Alexander stared.
Then Elena added:
“And that’s not the reason I waited six more months.”
He looked toward her.
She held his gaze.
“The reason I didn’t come home after I learned the truth…”
May you like
A pause.
“…was you.”
