Chapter 15 - Rachel separates from Trent
Rachel left Trent four months after the foyer incident.
Not the next morning.
That frustrated everyone.
“How can she stay with him after he hit you?”
Because marriages do not obey spectators.
Because Rachel had debts with him.
A business collapse.
A house sale.
Seven years of history.
Shame.
Fear of being alone.
And because leaving would require admitting several choices she had defended were indefensible.
She stayed in a rental apartment with him initially.
Then something shifted.
Not another punch.
I refuse to invent one.
Rachel said the final moment was a financial meeting.
Their accountant told them they needed to file individual disclosures accurately.
Trent said:
“We put all of Eleanor’s transfers under family loans and move on.”
Rachel answered:
“Not the ones I took.”
Trent said:
“She would have given them anyway.”
There.
The family logic again.
Rachel told me later:
“I heard your voice.”
What voice?
“Did you ask?”
She moved out the next week.
Not because Trent became worse.
Because she finally heard the structure.
If somebody would have said yes eventually, permission could be skipped.
Her mother.
The lender.
The house.
Money.
Everything.
Rachel filed for divorce two months later.
I did not celebrate.
Divorce was not punishment.
It was her decision about her marriage.
