Chapter 12

I moved my study.

Everyone thought it was symbolic.

It was practical.

The council room remained where it was.

My private desk moved into the family library beside the main hall.

No locked inner door during the day.

Ivy tested the rule first.

Naturally.

She walked in while I was speaking with three captains carrying half a cookie.

Everyone stopped.

She froze.

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Can Grandma have tea?”

One captain almost smiled.

“Yes.”

She nodded.

Then left.

Meeting resumed.

Simple.

That night Owen entered because he could not find his wooden train.

Less important.

Exactly the point.

I did not want my children deciding whether their fear was serious enough to deserve me.

Teresa noticed.

“You don’t have to rearrange your life because of me.”

“I’m not.”

She smiled.

“Liar.”

There she was.

My mother again.

I sat beside her.

“How bad were the bruises?”

Her smile disappeared.

“Celina grabbed me.”

“How often?”

“Enough.”

My jaw tightened.

Teresa touched my hand.

“Don’t.”

“What?”

“Turn this into rage because rage is easier than guilt.”

I looked at her.

She always did that.

Reached the thing beneath the thing.

“I should have known.”

“Yes.”

I stared.

She continued.

“You should have.”

No soft lie.

Then:

“And Celina should not have done it.”

Both truths.

I nodded.

Teresa looked toward the kitchen.

“She wasn’t always cruel.”

I said nothing.

“She became obsessed with being respected.”

“That doesn’t matter.”

“It matters if you want to understand.”

I did.

Not forgive.

Understand.

Celina entered my family believing authority would make her safe.

Then discovered Teresa already held the kind of influence no title could grant.

Love.

History.

Trust.

Celina could not earn it quickly.

So she tried to replace it with obedience.

Food.

Fear.

Locked doors.

That was the mistake ambitious people make.

May you like

They think if everyone obeys, everyone must respect them.

My three-year-old children knew the difference.
