Chapter 11

Celina asked for one final meeting.

Luciano refused a private conversation.

Claire attended.

So did Rachel.

Celina arrived without the engagement ring.

Luciano had already removed it the night Ellie was found.

The pale mark remained on her finger.

“I did love you,” she said.

Luciano looked at her.

“I believe you.”

She had expected anger.

The answer hurt more.

“Then you understand this wasn’t fake.”

“I understand that real feelings do not make real choices disappear.”

Celina looked down.

She admitted Marianne arranged their introduction.

“She didn’t tell me to marry you.”

“I know.”

“She never paid me to date you.”

“I know.”

“I stopped taking Sterling consulting money after we became engaged.”

“I know.”

Hope flickered in her face.

Luciano continued.

“You also started approving their contracts.”

The hope vanished.

Celina swallowed.

“I thought the businesses were legitimate.”

“Many were.”

“I thought Marianne was helping people.”

“She was.”

Celina looked frustrated.

“Then you understand.”

“No.”

Luciano’s voice stayed level.

“Understanding is not agreement.”

She began crying.

“Everything sounds uglier after investigators put it on paper.”

“Ellie looked ugly to you before anybody investigated.”

Celina froze.

He continued.

“Her clothes were torn.”

“I know.”

“She was hungry.”

“I know.”

“She believed she was being removed from her own home.”

Celina looked away.

“That was never supposed to happen.”

“You drafted the lake-house plan.”

“For weekdays.”

“She lives with me.”

“I thought we needed space.”

Luciano stared at her.

“From a three-year-old.”

Celina’s face collapsed.

There was no defense left.

Then she said something honest.

“I was jealous.”

Luciano waited.

“Not because you loved her.”

A pause.

“Because she belonged here without earning it.”

That sentence told him more about Celina than every invoice.

She had spent years trying to become acceptable in powerful rooms.

Correct dress.

Correct manners.

Correct clients.

Correct friends.

Ellie wandered through the estate in socks holding a stuffed rabbit and possessed unquestioned belonging.

Celina envied a child.

Marianne’s system gave that envy a practical direction.

Keep Ellie upstairs.

Keep her away from events.

Move her after the wedding.

Make the house easier to manage.

Luciano stood.

Celina looked up.

“Is there any chance?”

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

“Ever?”

“This isn’t punishment.”

He looked at her.

“I no longer trust you around my daughter.”

That distinction ended the meeting.

The engagement would not be repaired.

Love was no longer the relevant question.
