Chapter 13

The staff investigation hurt almost as much as Celina’s betrayal.

Luciano had wanted to believe everyone around Ellie would protect her automatically.

They had not.

Mrs. Parker had tried.

But even she accepted too many explanations when Ellie disappeared.

Denise saw Celina leading the girl toward the hidden corridor.

She said nothing.

Patricia knew the room was being used.

She stayed quiet.

Other staff members noticed dirty clothing and assumed Celina was handling discipline.

Nobody wanted to interfere with the woman expected to become Luciano’s wife.

Luciano could have fired everyone.

Instead, the independent child-safety consultant told him something he disliked.

“If you remove every person who failed, you may teach the next staff that mistakes are fatal and hiding them is safer.”

“So nobody is accountable?”

“That’s not what I said.”

Several people did lose their jobs.

One employee had actively falsified Ellie’s schedule.

Another helped Celina block Mrs. Parker from accessing the corridor.

Those decisions crossed a line.

Others remained under new rules.

No romantic partner of Luciano would have automatic authority over Ellie.

No family member could redirect childcare without written approval from the lead caregiver.

Any employee could report a child-safety concern through an outside service.

No retaliation.

No chain of family permission.

Luciano also changed the hidden room.

He did not seal it permanently.

Sarah, Ellie’s therapist, advised against making it a forbidden mystery.

So the wall panel was removed.

Completely.

The narrow room became visible from the corridor.

The service door at the back remained locked for security.

The front stayed open.

Workers installed lighting.

Clean walls.

A window-like interior glass panel facing the hallway.

Ellie visited during the renovation.

She stood beside Luciano holding her rabbit.

“Room broken?”

“No.”

“Celina room?”

Luciano crouched.

“No.”

“Mine?”

He paused.

“If you want.”

Ellie looked inside.

“Too small.”

Luciano smiled.

“Fair.”

She wandered away.

Weeks later she returned carrying crayons.

One wall eventually became a drawing board.

Luciano did not suggest it.

That mattered.

Ellie chose.

The old scratches remained beneath a clear protective panel.

Not as a museum.

May you like

Not for drama.

Because Luciano refused to teach the house to forget what happened simply because remembering was uncomfortable.
