Chapter 10

The harsh buzzing of the phone in the quiet taxi felt as loud as an air raid siren. Sarah stared at the glowing screen, her thumb hovering over the green 'Accept' button. Her hands trembled so violently she nearly dropped the device.

"Is that Daddy?" Emma asked, her wide blue eyes reflecting the bright light of the screen.

"I don't know, honey," Sarah whispered. She took a deep, steadying breath. If it was Ryan or Charles, answering would give them her location via GPS tracking. But if Daniel had set up this phone, he might have secured the connection.

She swiped the screen and accepted the call.

The video connected instantly. The bright, high-definition screen flared, showing a man sitting in the front seat of a moving vehicle. The sunlight streaming through his windshield illuminated his fair skin, the sharp line of his jaw, and the familiar, exhausted eyes that Sarah had mourned for three agonizing days.

"Daniel," Sarah gasped, pressing her free hand over her mouth to stifle a sob.

"Sarah," Daniel’s voice came through the speaker, live this time, laced with desperate urgency. "Thank God. I saw the news alert about the incident at the chapel. Are you and Emma safe?"

"Daddy!" Emma squealed, leaning over to look at the screen.

A pained, emotional smile broke across Daniel’s face as he saw his daughter. "Hi, pumpkin. Daddy loves you very much. Be a good girl for Mommy, okay?" He looked back up, his expression hardening into intense focus. "Sarah, listen to me. Where are you?"

"We're in a taxi," Sarah said quickly, glancing out the window at the passing skyscrapers. "We got away from Ryan. We're heading to the downtown bank branch, just like you said in the video. I have the key."

Daniel's face fell. The color drained from his cheeks. "No. Sarah, tell the driver to turn around. Do not go to the bank."

Sarah frowned, confusion warring with her panic. "What? Why? You said the ledgers were in the safe deposit box!"

"They were," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a tense, terrified whisper. "But they aren't anymore. I just intercepted a communication from my father’s security team. Charles knew about the box, Sarah. He didn't know I had the key, but he knew the location. He has an entire team of cartel enforcers waiting inside the lobby of that bank right now."

Sarah’s blood turned to ice. She looked up at the taxi driver, who was blissfully unaware, navigating through the heavy city traffic. They were less than ten blocks away.

"Driver, pull over!" Sarah shouted, tapping on the plexiglass divider. "Pull over right now!"

"Lady, we're in the middle of an avenue, I can't just stop—"

"Pull over!" she screamed, the sheer terror in her voice making the driver hit the brakes, swerving the yellow cab sharply toward the curb.

"Sarah, you have to get off the grid," Daniel instructed rapidly through the phone. "They are tracking your credit cards, your face on the street cameras. Everything. You need to get to the old ferry terminal on the east river. It's abandoned. I have a boat waiting there. It will take you to international waters where they can't touch you."

"Daniel, where are you?" Sarah cried, throwing a fifty-dollar bill at the driver and grabbing Emma’s hand. "Why aren't you coming with us?!"

Daniel looked at the camera, a tragic, profound sadness pooling in his eyes. He turned his phone slightly, revealing a dark, spreading stain of red blood soaking through the side of his dress shirt. He was pressing his free hand against his ribs, his knuckles white.

"They caught up to me at the safehouse an hour ago," Daniel wheezed, his breathing growing shallow. "I managed to get away, but I can't make it to the boat, Sarah. I’d only lead them right to you."

"No!" Sarah screamed, bursting out of the taxi onto the busy sidewalk, ignoring the stares of the pedestrians. "Daniel, you promised me! We're not leaving without you!"

"You have to," Daniel smiled softly, a tear escaping his eye. "Take the phone. Take the key. The evidence is on a micro-drive inside the key itself. Give it to the feds once you are out of the country. Destroy my family, Sarah. Burn their empire to the ground for what they did to us."

"Daniel, please..." Sarah begged, falling to her knees on the concrete, clutching Emma tightly as the little girl began to cry.

"I love you, Sarah. Tell Emma I love her," Daniel whispered. The sound of approaching sirens wailed through his phone speaker. "They're here. Keep her safe. Run."

The video call abruptly ended, the screen going pitch black.

Sarah kneeled on the bright, sunlit sidewalk, the deafening noise of the city swirling around her. She was entirely alone, hunted by her own family, holding the key to a criminal empire in one hand and her crying daughter in the other.

She looked up at the towering glass skyscrapers surrounding them. The Vance family owned this city. But they didn't own her anymore.

Sarah wiped her tears, pocketed the phone, and stood up. She grabbed Emma's hand tightly. It was time to run.
