Chapter 2

The standoff at the altar felt as though it suspended time. The bright, vivid colors of the floral arrangements—lush reds, brilliant whites, and deep greens—framed the horrifying tableau. Charles Vance stood a few feet away, his jaw clenched tight, his pale blue eyes darting frantically between his wife and the sealed coffin. He made no move to intervene, merely adjusting his silk tie as the muffled ringtone echoed against the vaulted ceilings.

Sarah pushed Margaret back, using her entire body as a shield for her trembling daughter. Her fair skin flushed with a sudden, overwhelming surge of adrenaline and fury.

"Have the director come out here," Sarah commanded, her voice ringing sharp and clear across the empty front pews. She locked her icy gaze onto Margaret’s panicking face. "Open it. Right now."

"You are out of your mind!" Margaret shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattering. "We are not opening my son's casket! The embalming, the preparation—it is sealed for a reason! Charles, do something! Stop this hysterical woman!"

"Sarah, please," Charles said, his voice attempting a soothing, paternal tone that failed entirely. "You are deeply distressed. The grief is making you imagine things. Let us just proceed with the service, and I will have the funeral director look into the noise afterward."

"It’s not imagination, Charles! The phone is ringing!" Sarah shouted.

At that exact moment, the ringing from inside the coffin abruptly stopped. A profound, heavy silence rushed back into the brightly lit room.

Before anyone could exhale, a sharp, distinct vibration hummed from the pocket of Sarah’s mourning dress.

She flinched. With a shaking hand, she reached into her pocket and pulled out her smartphone. The screen glared brightly in the sunlit room. A new text message glowed on the display. It was from Daniel’s contact number.

Margaret froze. The older woman’s chest heaved, her eyes glued to the glowing screen in Sarah’s hand. The ambient light caught the sheen of cold sweat breaking out across Margaret’s rosy forehead.

Sarah’s eyes scanned the brief line of text. The blood completely drained from her beautiful face, leaving her as pale as marble. Her breathing stopped. The words on the screen defied all logic, yet they explained the overwhelming sense of dread that had haunted her since the police first reported the accident.

"What does it say?" Charles demanded, stepping forward, his polished dress shoes clicking urgently. "Sarah, what is it?"

Sarah slowly lifted her head. She looked straight past Charles, locking her horrifying realization onto Margaret’s terrified eyes. She kept one arm wrapped securely around Emma, shielding the little girl from the truth she was about to unleash.

"It says," Sarah began, her voice dropping low with a horrifying, absolute certainty, "the body in that coffin isn’t Daniel."

"Give me that!" a new voice roared from the center aisle.

Ryan Vance, Daniel’s thirty-one-year-old brother, sprinted toward the altar, his tailored suit jacket flying open, his face twisted in a mask of violent desperation.
