Chapter 15

Vivienne never reached the estate gates.

Nico found her in the east garden.

She stood beside the fountain.

Still wearing Dante’s engagement ring.

Still arrogant.

Even after everything.

Dante walked toward her.

She smiled.

“Took you long enough.”

He stopped several feet away.

“You went near Ava.”

“She was awake.”

“You went near her.”

Vivienne rolled her eyes.

“Stop making the child sacred.”

Dante’s face became still.

She laughed.

“There it is again.”

No fear.

Not yet.

“You really learned nothing.”

Dante did not move.

“What did you tell her?”

“You heard.”

“My wife died giving birth.”

Vivienne smiled.

“That’s the family version.”

Dante stared.

Ava’s mother, Sofia, had died three years earlier after a difficult emergency delivery.

Dante had never questioned it.

Vivienne watched recognition creep in.

“You think all these old men lied about Lorenzo and told you the truth about everything else?”

Dante’s breathing changed.

“What do you know?”

Vivienne looked toward the house.

“Enough.”

He waited.

She hated his silence now.

No explosion.

No hand around her wrist.

Nothing she could use.

Finally she spoke.

Sofia had survived the delivery.

For eleven minutes.

Conscious.

Dante’s face changed.

Vivienne continued.

“She asked to see you.”

His throat tightened.

“I was outside the operating room.”

“Yes.”

“She was unstable.”

“Yes.”

“She died before they let me in.”

Vivienne’s smile became smaller.

“Because Samuel told them not to.”

Dante went completely still.

Vivienne watched him.

“Your precious family doctor decided seeing you would raise her heart rate.”

“Medical decision?”

Vivienne tilted her head.

“Maybe.”

Not enough.

Dante knew it.

“You said really died.”

Vivienne’s eyes glittered.

“Sofia said something before she died.”

“What?”

“She told Isabella.”

His mother.

Dante’s jaw tightened.

“What?”

Vivienne’s arrogance peaked one final time.

“You really want me to hand you the last useful thing I own?”

Dante stared.

Then removed her engagement ring from his pocket.

She frowned.

The ring she wore was a duplicate.

He placed the real one on the fountain edge.

Vivienne’s face changed.

“When?”

“Before the council.”

Her hand rose instinctively to the fake ring.

Dante continued.

“You were never leaving this estate engaged to me.”

For the first time, real fear appeared.

Small.

Earned.

Her last shield was gone.

Dante’s voice stayed quiet.

“What did Sofia say?”

Vivienne swallowed.

“She said Samuel knew something was wrong before the delivery.”

Dante’s eyes hardened.

“What?”

“She said someone changed her medication.”

Silence.

This was not proof.

Not yet.

Vivienne saw his reaction and tried to regain control.

“Go ahead.”

Her smile returned weakly.

“Burn the house down looking for answers.”

Dante looked at her.

“No.”

That frightened her more.

He stepped back.

“You're done directing what I do.”

Then he walked away.

Vivienne called after him.

“You think ignoring me makes you powerful?”

Dante did not turn.

“No.”

A pause.

“It just means you don't matter enough to choose my next move.”

That was the moment her arrogance finally broke.

Not when he hit Marcus.

Not when the council failed.

When she understood she no longer controlled his attention.

Upstairs, Ava was sitting in Isabella’s lap.

Lorenzo stood near the window.

Awkward.

Unsure whether he belonged.

Dante entered.

Ava lifted both arms.

He picked her up.

She whispered:

“Vivienne bad?”

Dante looked at his daughter.

“She did bad things.”

“Is Uncle Lorenzo bad?”

Lorenzo’s eyes moved toward him.

Dante answered carefully.

“He did bad things too.”

Ava thought about it.

Then pointed at Lorenzo.

“He can say sorry.”

Lorenzo’s face changed.

Dante did not rescue him from the moment.

Lorenzo stepped closer.

His breathing was uneven.

“I’m sorry.”

Ava looked at him.

“For chain?”

“Yes.”

“For camera?”

“Yes.”

She frowned.

“Very bad.”

Lorenzo almost laughed.

Almost cried.

“Yes.”

Ava leaned against Dante.

“Okay.”

Not forgiveness.

Not trust.

Just acknowledgment.

Enough for a three-year-old.

Later that night, Isabella told Dante the truth about Sofia.

Not all of it.

Only what she knew.

Sofia had suspected someone inside the old medical circle was still following his father’s succession rules.

She wanted Dante to dismantle them before Ava grew old enough to become another test.

Dante looked toward Samuel’s empty chair downstairs.

The doctor had left under guard to be questioned by the family elders who no longer trusted him.

Thomas had surrendered his authority.

Marcus and Vivienne were removed from every Bellandi operation.

Lorenzo stayed in Boston.

Not as co-boss.

Not as enemy.

Not yet as brother either.

Something undefined.

For once, Dante allowed a relationship to remain unfinished.

The next morning, Ava ate breakfast at the long family table.

No chains.

No cameras.

No tests.

Dante sat beside her.

Lorenzo stood in the doorway.

Ava looked up.

“Sit.”

He glanced at Dante.

Dante said nothing.

The choice belonged to Lorenzo.

After a moment, he sat across from them.

Ava pushed one piece of toast toward him.

“Not all.”

Lorenzo nodded solemnly.

“Understood.”

Dante almost smiled.

Then Isabella entered carrying an old wooden box.

She placed it beside him.

“What’s that?”

“Something Sofia left.”

Dante’s hand stopped.

Inside was a small medical vial.

Empty.

And a handwritten note.

Only five words:

ASK SAMUEL WHO CHANGED IT.

Dante stared at the vial.

Ava continued eating.

Lorenzo looked toward him.

Neither spoke.

The fight for the chair was over.

But the secret surrounding Sofia’s death had just opened.

And this time, Dante would not let anyone use his daughter to force the truth out of him.
