Chapter 9

Samuel did not run.
He came downstairs.
Slowly.
Calmly.
As though entering a consultation.
Dante watched him.
“You examined her.”
“Yes.”
“Before they chained her.”
“Yes.”
Ava stared.
Samuel did not look at her.
That angered Dante more than denial.
“Why?”
Samuel folded his hands.
“Because I needed to make sure they wouldn’t kill her.”
The room went silent.
Marcus rolled his eyes.
“See?”
He looked toward Dante.
“Everyone keeps acting like we threw her off a roof.”
Vivienne added:
“She sat on a porch.”
Dante looked toward her.
She smiled.
Still arrogant.
“She was uncomfortable.”
Ava’s eyes lowered.
Vivienne continued.
“Children survive being uncomfortable.”
Dante’s hand slowly closed.
Then opened.
Samuel noticed.
“So the rumors are true.”
Dante looked at him.
“You’ve learned restraint.”
Dante’s eyes narrowed.
Samuel smiled faintly.
“That ruins several assumptions.”
Lorenzo looked annoyed.
“Doctor.”
Samuel ignored him.
Dante saw that.
Another fracture.
“What assumptions?”
Samuel looked around the room.
“Your father believed pressure reveals the real heir.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
Dante turned.
“Again with my father.”
Samuel nodded.
“He tested Lorenzo.”
Lorenzo’s face hardened.
Samuel continued.
“He tested you.”
Dante stared.
“When?”
“You were nine.”
Memory.
A warehouse fire.
Dante trapped in an office.
His father outside.
Telling him to choose between running for the door or going back for Thomas.
Dante had gone back.
He had always thought it was an accident.
Samuel saw recognition.
“Yes.”
Dante’s face changed.
“My father started that fire?”
“A controlled burn.”
Thomas whispered:
“Samuel.”
The doctor ignored him.
Dante looked toward Thomas.
“You knew?”
Thomas’s eyes lowered.
“Yes.”
A lifetime shifted.
Dante’s breathing changed.
Lorenzo smiled.
“Now you understand.”
“No.”
Dante looked at him.
“I understand why you’re broken.”
Lorenzo’s smile vanished.
Dante continued.
“I don't understand why you worship the man who broke you.”
That hit.
Hard.
Lorenzo stepped closer.
“He made us.”
Dante’s eyes hardened.
“He used us.”
Silence.
Samuel watched with interest.
Vivienne looked between the brothers.
The test was no longer going the way they expected.
Then Dante turned to Samuel.
“My father tested children.”
“Yes.”
“You continued it.”
“I preserved the family.”
Ava’s voice came quietly from behind Nico.
“Bad doctor.”
Everyone stopped.
Samuel looked at her for the first time.
Ava stared back.
No tears now.
Just disappointment.
“Doctors help.”
Samuel’s expression changed.
Tiny.
Human.
Dante saw it.
Then Samuel looked away.
That was the first sign of shame from anyone involved.
But Lorenzo destroyed the moment.
“She’s three.”
His contempt returned.
“Stop letting a toddler judge grown men.”
Dante looked toward him.
Lorenzo smiled.
“There. That face again.”
He leaned closer.
“You keep proving us right.”
Then Samuel spoke.
“No.”
Lorenzo turned.
Samuel’s breathing slowed.
“He isn’t.”
The room shifted.
“What?”
Samuel looked at Dante.
“He hasn't done what your father predicted.”
Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.
Samuel continued:
“He rescued the child.”
“Contained himself.”
“Asked questions.”
“And exposed half the structure without ordering a single execution.”
Dante stared.
Lorenzo’s expression darkened.
Samuel whispered:
“The test failed.”
Lorenzo stepped toward him.
“No.”
Samuel finally looked frightened.
Not of Dante.
Of Lorenzo.
That was when Dante understood.
Samuel had not come to help Lorenzo take power.
He had come to see whether Dante deserved to keep it.
May you like
The old men were still running his father’s test.
And Lorenzo had never known he was being tested too.
