Chapter 1

Marco did not get into the SUV.

Nobody did.

He carried Elliot away from the lawn while two bodyguards cleared the immediate area around the vehicle.

Maya stayed beside her father, Samuel Brooks, the estate gardener.

The twelve-year-old still held the phone in both hands.

Conrad sat against the collapsed croquet rack with two security men several yards away.

No one touched him again.

Marco’s attorney, Rebecca Sloan, was called.

So was a licensed automotive examiner.

Marco refused to let one of his own mechanics inspect the SUV first.

That surprised his security chief.

“Boss, we can handle it.”

“That’s exactly what I don’t want.”

Marco looked toward Conrad.

“If somebody inside my family touched that vehicle, nobody inside my family decides what happened to it.”

The SUV remained where it was.

Elliot was taken indoors and examined by the family pediatrician.

The steel rod had never touched him.

Physically, he was fine.

Emotionally, he kept repeating the same sentence.

“It’s my ball.”

Marco sat beside him.

“I know.”

“Uncle Conrad said Caleb’s.”

Caleb Vale was Conrad’s ten-year-old son.

He was not at the garden party.

“He was wrong.”

Elliot hugged the football to his chest.

“No. Caleb gave me.”

Marco looked at him.

“When?”

“Birthday.”

That mattered.

Marco knew the ball.

He had assumed one of the staff bought it.

A small faded C had been written near the stitching.

Caleb.

Conrad had not mistaken the football for his son’s property.

He knew exactly where it came from.

And Caleb had apparently given it to Elliot.

So why threaten a three-year-old over it?

Rebecca arrived before the vehicle examiner.

Her first instruction was simple.

“Preserve Maya’s original phone.”

Maya immediately looked worried.

“It’s my only one.”

“You’re not losing it,” Rebecca said. “We’ll make a forensic copy and return it.”

Maya looked at Marco.

He nodded.

“Your video stays yours.”

Only then did she agree.

Rebecca watched the footage.

Conrad entered the garden parking area at 2:14 p.m.

He looked around.

Then crouched beneath Marco’s SUV for approximately forty seconds.

Something metallic flashed briefly near his hand.

He stood, adjusted his shirt, and walked away.

At 2:16, Maya stopped recording.

“That’s what you showed Marco?” Rebecca asked.

Maya nodded.

“What happened before?”

The girl opened another clip.

Taken nine minutes earlier.

Conrad stood beside the same SUV speaking on the phone.

No useful audio.

But his behavior was strange.

He repeatedly looked toward the terrace where Marco would later hold his meeting with the capos.

Then toward the flower bed where Elliot’s football eventually rolled.

Finally, he looked directly toward the estate cameras.

And waited until one rotated away before crouching beside the vehicle.

Rebecca paused the video.

Marco’s expression hardened.

“He knew the camera cycle.”

His security chief answered reluctantly.

“Conrad knows the estate system.”

Of course he did.

For seven years, Conrad had helped supervise family security logistics.

Rebecca looked from the footage to the SUV beyond the windows.

“The question isn’t only what he touched.”

May you like

Marco nodded.

“It’s why he cared who was watching.”
