Chapter 14

The Santoro estate reopened gradually.

Not to the old system.

The garden party security structure was dismantled.

Independent professionals handled surveillance.

Vehicle inspections followed written protocols.

Family members lost standing access to security control rooms.

Conrad’s office became ordinary administrative space.

Nothing ceremonial replaced him.

Marco wanted the absence visible.

People needed to understand that indispensable positions were a risk, not an honor.

Samuel ultimately chose to stay through the end of Maya’s school year.

His new employment contract included a simple provision Marco had never previously considered necessary.

Household employees could report concerns involving family members directly to an outside HR and legal service without routing anything through Santoro management.

Samuel read it.

“You think paperwork fixes people?”

“No.”

Marco looked toward the lawn.

“It gives people somewhere to go before they need a twelve-year-old with a phone.”

Samuel accepted that.

Maya received her old smartphone back after the forensic copy was completed.

Marco offered to replace it.

She refused.

“The camera still works.”

“It has a cracked corner.”

“It adds character.”

Marco had no argument.

Elliot eventually returned home.

The first afternoon, he carried the football outside.

He stopped near the flower bed.

Marco watched from the terrace without approaching.

Elliot looked at the spot where Conrad had driven the rod into the soil.

Then kicked the ball in the opposite direction and ran after it.

Nothing dramatic.

No speech.

Just a child reclaiming a lawn.

Later, Marco ordered the damaged landscaping rod discarded with ordinary grounds equipment.

Vincent seemed surprised.

“You don’t want it kept for records?”

“Evidence already released it.”

“As a reminder?”

Marco looked at him.

“I remember.”

The staged device was treated the same way after the case concluded.

No glass display.

No symbolic destruction.

No legend built around it.

Conrad had created theater because he believed fear changed people.

May you like

Marco refused to turn the aftermath into more theater.

The strongest answer was making the estate boring again.
