Chapter 10

The family consultant supplied the missing context.
Not because she possessed secret evidence.
Because Victor finally asked the right question.
Three months earlier Serena had requested advice about how to demonstrate that Ethan had “successfully bonded” with her before the wedding.
Dr. Porter told her there was no test.
No phrase.
No milestone.
A child did not need to call a future stepparent “Mom.”
Serena had been frustrated.
Then she asked:
“What if Victor needs proof?”
Dr. Porter documented the conversation because it concerned her.
Victor read the note in her office.
“Why would she say that?”
Dr. Porter looked at him.
“You'd have to answer that.”
Victor already knew.
He had forgotten his own words.
At an argument four months earlier, Serena accused him of using Ethan as an excuse to delay the wedding indefinitely.
Victor, angry and exhausted, had said:
“When Ethan can look at you like family instead of someone he's afraid of, we'll set the date.”
Serena asked:
“And how exactly am I supposed to prove that?”
Victor answered sarcastically:
“I don't know. Maybe when he runs to you instead of Lily. Maybe when he calls you Mom without somebody asking.”
He had forgotten the sentence.
Serena had not.
Now three earlier clues changed meaning at once.
The repeated attempts to remove Lily were not only jealousy.
Lily was the person Ethan ran toward.
The private sessions were not ordinary bonding time.
Serena was trying to manufacture the milestone Victor had carelessly described.
The fake behavioral notes were not simply preparation to fire Lily.
They were evidence Serena could use to argue that Lily, not Serena, was the reason Ethan failed Victor’s “test.”
And FINAL PRACTICE had been exactly that.
A rehearsal.
The forensic team recovered another short audio fragment from a nearby hallway microphone.
Serena:
“Say Mommy Serena.”
Ethan crying:
“No.”
Adrian:
“Then take the rabbit away.”
Serena:
“He doesn't have it.”
A scuffle.
Then Ethan screaming.
Victor stopped the audio.
No one needed to hear it again.
The fracture had most likely occurred when Ethan resisted being physically positioned during that rehearsal.
Serena and Adrian then needed an explanation before Victor saw the injury.
Lily came upstairs unexpectedly.
They used her.
Victor sat alone afterward.
For days he had thought the twist was that Serena used his son to secure a marriage.
The deeper truth was uglier.
Victor had turned his child’s trust into a condition adults could compete to satisfy.
May you like
Serena and Adrian chose manipulation.
But Victor had unknowingly made Ethan into the test.
