Chapter 14

Bernadette finally stopped denying the frame.

She sat in Vittorio’s study with attorneys present.

No family audience.

No council.

No room left to perform for.

Vittorio placed Maria’s forged statement in front of her.

Bernadette looked at it.

Her shoulders lowered.

“You were going to destroy her.”

“She would've left.”

Maria’s face tightened.

Bernadette noticed.

For the first time, she seemed ashamed to meet the maid’s eyes.

“She would have been paid.”

Maria’s breath caught.

Then she laughed once.

Not from humor.

From disbelief.

“You think money changes what you were making me carry?”

Bernadette said nothing.

Maria stepped closer.

Her hands were shaking, but her voice was not.

“You wanted a three-year-old to think I hurt him.”

Bernadette looked down.

That silence mattered more than an excuse.

Vittorio dismissed Maria from the room afterward.

Not because she was staff.

Because she had already said what she needed.

Then he turned toward his aunt.

“I wanted revenge.”

Bernadette’s eyes lifted.

“I know.”

“When I saw Luca on that ground, I wanted you afraid.”

“You succeeded.”

“No.”

Vittorio shook his head.

“That lasted seconds.”

He placed the legal documents beside her.

“What comes next lasts longer.”

Bernadette faced child-endangerment and fraud-related investigations, along with civil claims connected to the forged household records.

Vittorio did not bury them.

He also provided full motor-court footage showing his own violence against her.

His attorney warned him.

He signed the release anyway.

Bernadette studied him.

“You'll let them punish you too?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vittorio’s gaze did not move.

“Because Luca is going to grow up knowing rules apply after anger, not only before it.”

Bernadette’s composure finally cracked.

Tears filled her eyes.

Then she whispered the one thing she had not admitted.

“I hated watching him change you.”

Vittorio’s expression softened only slightly.

Bernadette continued.

“You became everything your father mocked.”

A father first.

A man who questioned violence.

A boss who allowed outsiders to challenge him.

That was why Luca had become the perfect target.

He represented every change Bernadette feared.

And that truth ended whatever remained between aunt and nephew.
