Chapter 15

The next summer, the motor court looked ordinary again.

Bernadette’s luxury car was gone.

So was the detailing rack Luca had once been forced to kneel beside.

Vittorio replaced the beverage station with a locked service area accessible only to household staff.

Not because he wanted the estate to feel like a fortress.

Because children should never depend on family rank for basic safety.

Bernadette accepted a negotiated legal resolution that included strict restrictions on contact with Luca, financial penalties, and court-ordered supervision requirements.

She no longer held any Rossetti authority.

Samuel retired completely.

Nico spent months outside operational leadership.

Vittorio did not restore him simply because he eventually confessed.

Trust was not a position someone earned back through one useful act.

Vittorio also faced consequences for striking Bernadette.

He accepted them.

Maria stayed.

But her employment changed.

Written authority.

Clear responsibilities.

A direct channel to Luca’s physician.

And permission to challenge Vittorio without risking her job.

The first time she used it, she told him he was working too late again.

Vittorio stared at her.

Maria’s hand tightened around her clipboard.

Then Vittorio glanced toward Luca asleep on the sofa.

He closed the file.

Maria exhaled.

Progress.

On Luca’s fourth birthday, the estate kitchen filled with the smell of blackberries.

Vittorio entered and found flour across the counter.

Luca stood on a small stool wearing another paper chef hat.

Maria was helping him fold dough.

He looked up.

“Daddy.”

Vittorio approached.

Luca proudly held out a small plate.

Blackberry cobbler.

For a fraction of a second, Vittorio was back in the motor court.

Broken plate.

Purple filling.

His son clutching his stomach.

He forced the memory to loosen.

Then took the plate.

Luca watched his face carefully.

“Good?”

Vittorio took a bite.

His eyes softened.

“Very.”

Luca smiled.

Then his expression became serious.

“Aunt Bernie likes blackberry?”

Maria stopped moving.

Vittorio lowered the fork.

Luca looked up at him.

“Can she have some when she's good again?”

The kitchen became quiet.

Vittorio could have said never.

Part of him wanted to.

Instead he crouched beside his son.

“I don't know if that day comes.”

Luca thought about it.

“Okay.”

Then he returned to the dough.

No tears.

No argument.

Vittorio stayed crouched for another moment.

He had removed Bernadette’s power.

Protected his son.

Broken the conspiracy.

What he could not decide was whether Luca might someday want a relationship with the woman who had hurt him.

And for once, Vittorio understood that not every future belonged to him to control.
