Chapter 13

The board did not act that afternoon.

Real accountability required more than anger.

Over the next three weeks, Margaret completed transaction testing.

Independent counsel interviewed employees.

Northline provided records after receiving formal demands from the foundation.

The foundation’s bank preserved authentication histories.

Rachel located the original Blue Room donor restrictions.

Mark Feldman documented which approvals he had processed without proper verification.

Vittorio submitted his own emails.

Some were embarrassing.

He had repeatedly told Mark to “just let Owen handle it.”

He had signed annual board certifications without reading supporting schedules carefully.

He had not stolen money.

But he had built the environment in which family authority replaced normal controls.

The board’s lawyers prepared a voluntary disclosure regarding potential misuse of charitable funds.

Donors whose restricted gifts had been affected were contacted individually.

Some were furious.

One family asked for its money back.

Another agreed to leave the donation in place if the Blue Room was finally built.

Vittorio personally offered neither pressure nor favors.

Daniel handled the concert-hall incident separately.

Witness statements confirmed Owen swung first.

They also confirmed Vittorio slapped Bianca after removing her hand from Nico’s wheelchair.

Bianca could pursue the complaint if she chose.

Vittorio instructed Daniel not to bargain the foundation case against it.

“No trade.”

Daniel nodded.

“That may cost you.”

“I know.”

Nico began seeing a child therapist experienced with young children who had experienced frightening caregiver behavior.

He stopped asking for Bianca.

But he also stopped giving handmade gifts to anyone.

That detail bothered Vittorio more than he admitted.

Then one afternoon Rachel called.

“We found the blue binders.”

Vittorio stood.

“Where?”

Owen had kept them in an off-site storage unit rented by Northline.

His attorney had turned them over as part of his cooperation with the audit.

The binders contained Claire’s original invoice comparisons.

Handwritten notes.

Vendor ownership research.

And a signed memorandum Claire had prepared for the board.

It documented the scheme weeks before her death.

At the bottom Claire had written:

I am asking Bianca one final time to correct this privately before I submit it.

Vittorio stared at the sentence.

May you like

Even after everything Bianca had done, Claire had given her a chance.

Now Vittorio would have to decide whether Bianca deserved one too.
