Chapter 17

Nico gave another handmade gift when he was seven.

The first since the concert.

That mattered more to Vittorio than Nico knew.

The gift was for Rachel.

A wooden music stand.

Technically.

It leaned slightly left.

One support bracket had been attached backward.

Nico had painted three blue notes across the base.

Rachel was celebrating ten years with the foundation.

The Blue Room children made gifts.

Nico joined them.

For three weeks the stand stayed unfinished on his worktable.

Then one afternoon Vittorio found him sanding the same corner repeatedly.

“You’re going to remove the entire leg.”

Nico stopped.

“It’s wrong.”

“What’s wrong?”

“All.”

Vittorio looked at the stand.

It was not good furniture.

That was not the point.

“Do you want help?”

“No.”

Five minutes later:

“Yes.”

They moved the bracket.

The stand remained crooked.

Nico stared.

“Rachel has nice things.”

“Yes.”

“This bad.”

Vittorio understood.

Not craftsmanship.

Comparison.

Bianca had looked at a handmade airplane and seen embarrassment.

Nico had learned that gifts could become tests of whether the giver was good enough.

Vittorio hated that lesson.

He also knew telling Nico the stand was perfect would teach another bad one.

“It’s crooked.”

Nico looked hurt.

Vittorio continued.

“You made it.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted to give it to Rachel.”

“Yes.”

“Then she gets to decide what she thinks of it.”

Nico frowned.

“That dangerous.”

A little.

The anniversary event took place inside the Blue Room.

Small.

No gala.

No orchestra.

Children played instruments badly.

Adults applauded anyway.

When gift time came, Nico almost kept the stand behind his wheelchair.

Rachel noticed.

She did not ask.

That helped.

Finally:

“I made this.”

Rachel crouched.

Nico held it out.

“The leg bad.”

Rachel looked.

“Yes.”

Nico stared.

Vittorio nearly laughed.

Rachel continued.

“But I like the music notes.”

She touched the base.

“And I know exactly where I’m putting it.”

“Where?”

“My office.”

“It falls.”

“Then we fix the foot.”

Nico became quiet.

Not:

It’s perfect.

Not:

It doesn’t matter.

Something could be imperfect and still wanted.

Rachel placed the stand beside her desk.

Two weeks later maintenance added a small stabilizing pad underneath.

Nico discovered it.

“You changed.”

Rachel nodded.

“It kept tipping.”

He looked offended.

Then:

“Now good?”

“Now stable.”

Different.

Nico accepted that.

The stand remained in Rachel’s office for years.

Not because everyone agreed it was beautiful.

Because she liked it.

Months later Nico made a small wooden box for Daniel.

Daniel opened it.

The lid stuck.

He said:

“This is extremely secure.”

Nico laughed.

Another gift survived.

Then another.

The habit returned slowly.

No therapist marked a completion date.

No donor story mentioned it.

Vittorio noticed anyway.

Bianca had broken one airplane.

For a while, Nico stopped giving pieces of himself to people.

The repair was not making one perfect gift.

It was discovering that the next person did not automatically become Bianca.
