Chapter 11

Valentina did not summon Victor.
She removed his power first.
His conservatory access disappeared.
His office locks changed.
His authority over family security ended.
Three financial accounts requiring dual approval were frozen pending review.
His advisory staff were reassigned.
His private meeting room was sealed.
Each decision was delivered without argument.
Victor called after the seventh.
Valentina answered.
His breathing was measured.
“You're making a mistake.”
“No.”
“You think Celeste is suddenly trustworthy because she cried?”
“No.”
A pause.
“Then what are you doing?”
Valentina looked through the glass wall toward Owen playing with a wooden puzzle.
“Separating your lies from hers.”
Victor’s voice lowered.
“You still need me.”
Valentina almost smiled.
“That sentence is the whole problem.”
He hung up.
Celeste gave a complete statement through counsel.
She admitted agreeing to push Owen.
Admitted wanting Valentina publicly humiliated.
Admitted the contracts mattered.
Admitted resenting Owen because she saw him as proof Valentina would always have something untouchable.
She did not ask forgiveness.
That was the first useful thing she did.
Then she exposed Victor’s financial leverage.
He had quietly guaranteed several loans for Celeste’s company.
If her conservatory contracts vanished, he could call the guarantees and take control of her business assets.
Valentina looked at the documents.
“You didn't know?”
Celeste laughed bitterly.
“I thought he was helping me.”
Her eyes were swollen.
“He kept telling me blood protects blood.”
Valentina responded quietly.
“Only when protection doesn't require obedience.”
Celeste looked away.
Then her phone rang.
Her attorney answered it.
His expression changed.
“What?”
Celeste stood.
Victor had just contacted two senior capos and called an emergency family council.
Not to defend himself.
To remove Valentina.
His allegation:
She had become emotionally unstable, assaulted family members in public, seized assets without authority, and endangered the Morello organization through irrational retaliation.
Victor had lost control of the conservatory.

So he was moving the fight somewhere older.
The family itself.
