Chapter 9

Valentina sat very still.

“What was the second contingency?”

Graham did not want to answer.

His lawyer whispered something.

He wiped his palms against his trousers.

“If the child suffered serious injury…”

Celeste appeared in the doorway.

Her attorney tried to stop her.

She ignored him.

“What?”

Graham stared at the table.

“Victor believed you would withdraw from public life.”

Celeste's face collapsed.

“No.”

Graham continued.

“He said grief would make the board insist on temporary leadership.”

Valentina did not move.

“And who becomes temporary chair?”

“Victor.”

Celeste took one step backward.

“He told me Owen was never in danger.”

Graham looked at her.

“I was told you understood the risk.”

“You liar.”

Her voice cracked through the room.

Valentina turned toward Celeste.

“Don't.”

Celeste’s chest rose and fell rapidly.

For once, Valentina was the one restraining revenge.

Not physically.

With authority.

Celeste sat.

Graham explained the logic.

Victor wanted a public crisis before the trust vote.

Best outcome: Owen frightened but unharmed, Valentina attacked relatives, donors witnessed it, and Victor demanded an emergency board review.

Second outcome: Owen suffered enough injury that Valentina withdrew.

The phrase made Celeste physically sick.

Valentina’s nails pressed into her palm.

“And death?”

Graham looked up.

“I never discussed death.”

“Did Victor?”

“No.”

That distinction mattered.

Valentina refused to invent what evidence did not show.

Then Nolan entered.

His face was grim.

“We found Victor’s original maintenance request.”

Valentina looked at him.

The submerged shelf had not been removed for ordinary servicing.

Victor had specifically requested complete removal from the koi garden for forty-eight hours.

Reason:

Structural photographs.

No photographs were ever scheduled.

Attached to the request was an internal note.

Keep rescue equipment out of donor sightline until after incident.

Not reception.

Incident.

Victor had named the event before it happened.

Valentina felt something inside her go cold.

But Nolan had not finished.

“The note was edited after submission.”

“By Victor?”

“No.”

He turned the tablet.

“By Celeste’s account.”

Celeste stared at him.

“I never wrote that.”

Someone had been using both Victor and Celeste’s access.

There was still another hand inside the plan.
